Since coming back on the national blues/R&B scene in the mid 1990s, Toni Lynn Washington has released an album every two or three years, working mainly with members of the thriving scene around her home base of Boston. Her first album for the Canadian Northern Blues label finds her collaborating with guitarist and producer Duke Robillard, on what amounts to a tribute to her forebears, performing classic songs associated with the likes of Ruth Brown, Ma Rainey and Dinah Washington. As always, she shows herself to be equally at ease on slow-rocking blues numbers like Bessie Smith's"Back Water Blues," the sassy, strutting "I Don't Hurt Anymore," the Memphis-style R&B "Everyday Will Be Like a Holiday," and spiced-up jazz standards, as on an interesting mid-tempo arrangement of "Willow Weep for Me." Her rendition of the Gamble and Huff song "It's Been a Long Time (Been So Long)" is, well, a bit too long; it doesn't have enough musical or lyrical substance to sustain a rendition that lasts over five minutes. But that's just about the only weak moment on this fine album. At an age when most people are settling into retirement, Toni Lynn Washington appears to just be hitting her stride. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Ronnie Earl Duke Meets The Earl CD (2005) (Import) Canada
Been So Long
$15.19 The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a kind of jazz blues hybrid style in recent years, it marks a return to straight blues, and with guests like Jimmy McGriff and Mighty Sam McClain aboard on select tracks, The Duke Meets the Earl has the feel of a super session. Throughout, Earl's guitar is featured in the left channel and Robillard's in the right, leading to some wonderful guitar dialogues, particularly on an epic, nearly 16-minute-long version of Walter Price's "My Tears." Another extended workout ...
| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Been So Long
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the first of several Big Joe Turner tunes, the Ahmet Ertegun penned ...
