Famed country-blues duo Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee were leading lights in the American blues invasion of Europe, being among the first US blues performers to play and record in the UK. This release is culled from a 1958 London session where Chris Barber's Jazz Band helped out some, and includes 25 tracks. Among those featured are "Brownie's Blues," "Just A Dream," "I Love You Baby," "You'd Better Mind," and the bonus track "Fox Hunt."

The definitive rock opera, TOMMY liberated the Who from a "singles band" stigma, marking them as a substantial artistic force. Composer Pete Townshend had flirted with the conceptual format on two previous releases, but here his vision is spread over two ambitious records that ...

The follow-up to FIRE, the band's breakthrough smash, HONEY continued the Ohio Players' golden streak by building on the elements that made FIRE such a hit: smooth soul balladry, churning funk, and plenty of freaky, outrageous attitude (due in large part to the cartoonish lead vocals of Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner). Slow songs and balladry seem to play a larger part here, as the lush leadoff title track and the carpe diem anthem "Let's Do It" indicate. "Alone" strikes an unusually somber note for the Players in its sincerity, a mood marked by the song's comparatively spare arrangements.
But the Players thrive on pulse-quickening jams, too, and "Ain't Givin' Up No Ground," with its jittery pop-and-lock rhythms, and the stomping groove of "Fopp" rank with the band's best sweaty workouts. Of course, the irrepressible "Love Rollercoaster" may be HONEY's highlight. (Its ...

Though they had fellow British folk-rockers like Fairport Convention and Steeleye Span for company, Pentangle explored a musical world of their own design. Their all-acoustic sound combined traditional British folk with jazz, rock and Indian music, much as American groups like the Airplane and the Dead were mating their roots with other influences. BASKET OF LIGHT is perhaps the finest of Pentangle's excellent early recordings.
As always, the focal point is crystal-voiced singer Jacqui McShee, capable of giving peer Sandy Denny a run for her money. Master guitarists Bert Jansch and John Renbourn's interplay is magical throughout, and when they take to banjo and sitar respectively on "House Carpenter," they sound equally at home. Much of the jazz feel is provided by eminently swinging bassist Danny Thompson (the only man capable of making "Sally Go Round the Roses" ...

Dar Williams' fifth album THE BEAUTY OF THE RAIN finds the singer-songwriter getting around the loneliness of being "a girl with a guitar" and chronicling her move from New York City to Massachusetts by breaking out her little black book to reel in a number of famous names. The result is a fuller-sounding album minus the kind of forced chemistry that occurs when it's an artist's label rather than the artist who arranges such an all-star affair. This organically flowing record benefits from the contributions ...
