Lauderdale. Following the triumph of Rust Never Sleeps, Hawks & Doves benefited from the enormous critical goodwill Neil Young had amassed, though fans and critics nevertheless were baffled by its set of obscure acoustic and country-tinged songs. The seven-plus-minute "The Old Homestead" (copyright 1974) was interpreted by some as an allegory for Young's relationship to CSNY, perhaps because that was the only way to make any sense of the most mysterious Young lyric since "The Last Trip to Tulsa." In retrospect, now that it's known Young was distracted by domestic medical concerns while working on the album, its theme of perseverance in the face of adversity, both in a personal context of family commitment ("Stayin' Power," "Coastline"), and in a national context of hard work and patriotism ("Union Man," "Comin' Apart at Every Nail," "Hawks & Doves") seems more apparent, as does the sense that Young may have been trying to fulfill his recording contract (even with the inclusion of trunk songs like "The Old Homestead," the album runs less than half an hour) while devoting a bare minimum of his time and attention to the effort. The result is correspondingly slight. ~ William Ruhlmann Neil Young hit a commercial peak with Harvest in 1972 and a critical peak with Rust Never Sleeps in 1979. Most of the 1980s, when he was frequently distracted by personal problems, were problematic on both scores, starting with this album, a patchwork effort from various sessions in the manner of American Stars 'N Bars, but without any really strong material. Subsequent efforts, however, would prove it one of his better efforts of the decade. ~ William Ruhlmann Following up the energetic, one-two punch of RUST NEVER SLEEPS and LIVE RUST, Neil Young takes a more understated route with 1980's HAWKS & DOVES. On rustic tracks such as "Little Wing" and "The Old Homestead" (both written in the mid-'70s), Young revisits his HARVEST era with a spare sound that relies heavily on his distinctive voice and acoustic guitar. As the album progresses, its scope widens both musically and lyrically; "Stayin' Power" is a jaunty, piano-driven tune about the power of love, while "Comin' Apart at Every Nail" is a guitar-laden hoedown that comments on the US government. This surprisingly patriotic tone (especially coming from a Canadian) This politically minded theme takes on a surprisingly patriotic tone on the album's closing title track, the Canadian songwriter's flag-waving tribute to the United States. A highly underrated record, HAWKSMusician (5/94, p.69) - "...The first half [of HAWKS & DOVES] is made up of muted, spooky acoustic music. The second rips hard, building up as it goes along to create a vivid snapshot of the U.S.A.'s turning away from Jimmy Carter's liberalism to embrace the temptations of Ronald Reagan...." Neil Young Hawks & Doves Songs Hawks & Doves Music Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) A minor Meisterwerk When this album came out on vinyl in 1980 it was easily dismissed as a throwaway. But some 23 years later the HDCD production and the simple straight forwardness of the topical songs has brought this album back into focus.
Highly underrated, this album gets better each and every listen. Submitted by a reviewer (King of Prussia, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Neil rocks!! I have been a long time Neil Young fan, and this is good old fashioned Neil Young. This music brings back memories to me of my high school days, partying and carring on like alot of us did in my age group. I would recommend this CD to anyone. The second half is particularily good, a little more upbeat, and rockin'.
Enjoy,

Pigeons and other boring birds... Might have been a better idea to have the first side of this one paired with the second side of "American Stars and Bars" and call it "American Hawks in Bars" and simply can the rest or give it to David Geffen! Into the eighties and judging by the first half of this lp it seemed like Neil Young was carrying on the momentum that made Rust Never Sleeps such a successful and in context of Young's career, a very important album. "Little Wing" starts procedings off with a very downbeat and melancholic harmonica over some heavy thumping acoustic guitar playing and is one of the finest songs in the Young canon as far as I'm concerned, and "Homestead" typical of the lengthy songs that Neil loves to put together as he weaves and tells a story among the cloaked nature of the narrative. This one documents the history of Young's time with Crosby Stills and Nash and the aftermath, but this theme is well veiled and hidden in the story, but once pointed out it starts to unravel and while this was the highlight of the album it is by miles when anything on the B side is taken into consideration. Much of it is country tinged but devoid of any emotion and "Staying Power" starts of without any energy what so ever and completely kills off what ever the rest of the album may have contained. Much like the A side of American Stars And Bars but luckily that album had "Like A hurricane", and as much as I like "Homestead" and "Little wing" and the mariner like "Captain Kennedy" they still fall short of saving this album due to the negativity of the country material and its sparseness and lack of any real emotion.
More a two and a half than a three star...

solid work fro a legend. neil young is a legend, and this cd shows why, while it is far from his best work, it is still solid enough and has enough great tracks on it to be considered a very worthy cd or anybodies collection. Submitted by robsmalley (thornhurst, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
for those who cannot get enough Neil vocal charisma Hawks & Doves, first released in October 1980, is for those who cannot get enough Neil vocal charisma.
Musical inspiration pervades "Lost in Space" and there is 7½ minutes of musical interest in "The Old Homestead"
