This Land Is Your Land Live: The Folk Years CD

The mighty windy collection of live folk songs This Land Is Your Land Live: The Folk Years was recorded on a two-night folk revival held at Carnegie Mellon University in early 2002. Although all of the acts sound a little older and many sound noticeably gruffer, acts like the Kingston Trio, Roger McGuinn, and Randy Sparks & the Minstrels prove that they can still turn on the folk machine and crank out some pretty faithful reinterpretations of their hits. Two unexpected highlights are the Brothers Four's contributions, "Greenfields" and "Try to Remember," both of which sound every bit as rich and full (if not richer and fuller) than the versions from decades past. Unfortunately, a synth-disco rendition of Glenn Yarbrough's "Baby the Rain Must Fall" sounds glaringly out of place, and the Highwaymen's subdued and lazy "Michael" doesn't reach the passionate peak it could. Still, it's great to know that the Smothers Brothers are still as goofy and funny as they were in their heyday, and chilling to discover that Barry McGuire's stark "Eve of Destruction" is even more haunting 40 years later. ~ Zac Johnson
