Unforgettable Nat "King" Cole film
$14.29 On their Criss Cross follow-up to Upward and Onward, One For All mainly concentrate on original group member compositions, continuing to hone the neo-bop these musicians have become known for over the past decade. The Long Haul was recorded after a single gig in New York, keeping the improvisatory freshness of the session bright. While the members of One For All perform in this manifestation only occasionally, they manage to share the spotlight and provide an unbridled musical camaraderie (a nineties version of the Jazz Messengers would not be far off the mark.) Among the highlights are drummer Joe Farnsworth's classic Coltrane quartet influenced opener "A Cry For Understanding," the Latin tinged, three horn melody on "Echoes In the Night," pianist David Hazeltine's reflective contributions "The Poo" and "Summer Nights" the later starts to sizzle mid way through into lazy funk before the initial theme gently reappears. Tenor saxophonist Eric ...

| | Mitch Miller 50 All-American Favorites CDs (2004)
Unforgettable Nat "King" Cole movie DVD
$19.05 This double-disc set is one of the more bountiful compilations gleaned from Mitch Miller's voluminous Columbia Records catalog. Unfortunately, the contents of 50 All-American Favorites (2004) have been confined to the years 1958 to 1962, during which time Miller's unconventional performance style was on its final descent. Mitch Miller & the Gang consisted of Miller fronting a full choral ensemble of vocalists who sang in unison. As the bandleader was also the concurrent head of Columbia Records' Artists and Repertoire, he was able to use his business savvy and influence to flood the market with a seemingly endless stream of thematic releases. The long-players were filled with familiar popular music, folk, seasonal, and patriotic standards and often came with removable singalong lyric sheets that could be distributed for the purpose of audience participation. As remarkable as it might seem from the perspective of a modern pop listener, Miller and company garnered no less than 19 Top 40 singles by 1958 -- the point at which the anthology begins. That is one reason that none of Miller's best-known sides are included ...
| | ABC Look Of Love CD (2001) (Import) Import
Unforgettable Nat "King" Cole video
$35.49 Of course, it is the group's chart hits that stand out here, and for good reason. The collection's title cut, and "Poison Arrow" (an early MTV video sensation) are near-perfect pop songs. Likewise, the lilting electro-ballad "Be Near Me," the Smokey Robinson homage "When Smokey Sings" (which appropriates the riff from "Tears of a Clown"), and the catchy bounce of "How to Be a Millionaire" push all the right pleasure buttons. A winner as both a hits collection and a comprehensive career overview, LOOK OF LOVE is the definitive ABC disc to own.
This deluxe Sound and Vision release of Look of Love: The Very Best of Abc comprises 30 tracks on double CD including all of the hits plus rare 12 inch mixes and two tracks on CD for the very first time. The DVD (PAL / Region 0) 'Absolutely Abc' includes 14 promotional videos mixed in 5.1. One of the defining acts of the early 1980's, ABC are still regarded as one of the most talented ensembles of this time and their first album The Lexicon Of Love is still thought of as a classic of the era. Included here from Lexicon are the brilliant tracks 'The Look Of Love' (UK No. 4), 'Poison Arrow' (UK No. 6) and 'Tears Are Not Enough' (UK No. 19). Other top 40 singles featured ...
