Don McLean's second album, American Pie, which was his first to gain recognition after the negligible initial sales of 1970's Tapestry, is necessarily dominated by its title track, a lengthy, allegorical history of rock & roll, because it became an unlikely hit, topping the singles chart and putting the LP at number one as well. "American Pie" has remained as much a cultural touchstone as a song, sung by everyone from Garth Brooks to Madonna, its title borrowed for a pair of smutty teen comedies, while the record itself has earned a registered three-million plays on U.S. radio stations. There may not be much more to note about it, then, except perhaps that even without a crib sheet to identify who's who, the song can still be enjoyed for its engaging melody and singable chorus, which may have more to do with its success than anything else. Of course, the album also included "Vincent," McLean's paean to Van Gogh, which has been played two-million times. Nothing else on the album is as effective as the hits, but the other eight original songs range from sensitive fare like "Till Tomorrow" to the sarcastic, uptempo "Everybody Loves Me, Baby." American Pie -- the album -- is very much a record of its time; it is imbued with the vague depression of the early '70s that infected the population and found expression in the works of singer/songwriters. "American Pie" -- the song -- is really a criticism of what happened in popular music in the '60s, and "Vincent" sympathizes with Van Gogh's suicide as a sane comment on an insane world. "Crossroads" and "Empty Chairs" are personal reflections full of regret and despondency, with the love song "Winterwood" providing the only respite. In the album's second half, the songs get more portentous, tracing society's ills into war and spiritual troubles in "The Grave" and "Sister Fatima." The songs are made all the more poignant by the stately folk-pop arrangements and McLean's clear, direct tenor. It was that voice, equally effective on remakes of pop oldies, that was his salvation when he proved unable to match the songwriting standard set on Tapestry and this collection. But then, the album has an overall elegiac quality that makes it sound like a final statement. After all, if the music has died, what else is there to say? ~ William Ruhlmann Don McLean's second album, American Pie, which was his first to gain recognition after the negligible initial sales of 1970's Tapestry, is necessarily dominated by its title track, a lengthy, allegorical history of rock & roll, because it became an unlikely hit, topping the singles cRolling Stone (1/20/72, p.49) - "...["American Pie"] is a brilliant song, a metaphor for the death and rebirth of rock that's at once complex and immediately accessible..." -Lester Bangs Don Mclean American Pie Songs American Pie Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Revist A Classic All Time Great CD In 1971 the Album American Pie changed the lives of many people around the world. One of All Time Great Albums/CDs Excellent re-mastering of the # 1 album with monster # 1 hit, the title song. Empty Chairs, Crossroads are both greater songs, but not so commercial. I can't get enough of those two songs. Vincent is both great commercially, as it was also a # 1 and artistically. Winterwood and Till Tomorrow are also good. Rare is it that one album has such great songs, but this is usually the case with the few really great and long term stars like McLean; the first few albums are the best. For those of you who love this album, I recommend you obtain most or all of his other original albums, now out. There are some real jewels on these albums, such as "The Pride Parade" and "Oh, My, What a Shame" on the album that followed American Pie, called simply "Don McLean". My favorite McLean is his 1999 PBS concert "Starry, Starry, Night", both the album and DVD, though I was disappointed he did not perform "Empty Chairs". The Double CD has more material that I wish was on the DVD. There is also a VHS only available from McLean himself via internet with Garth Brooks singing "Empty Chairs" that I recommend. Keep singing and writing, Don! Submitted by a reviewer (Douglas, GA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Yes indeed The aussie reviewer below me said it right. This magnificant album changed all our lives and feelings. "Vincent" alone would be worth the entire album..and then there's "American Pie". I believe only Don himself can sing that song the way he does and get the REAL message through!
A MUST. Submitted by dragstripfreaky (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

American Pie
$50.89 Described as a thundering return to the band's original hard rock sound, `Bleed Like Me' features eleven tracks that return to the power and simplicity of their debut. The first single is the explosive `Why Do You Love Me'. Amongst the other highlights of the album are the dynamic opener `Bad Boyfriend', a heavy out and out rock song featuring a guest appearance from Dave Grohl on drums. Aside from Grohl, the album also features an additional guest in the shape of Beck bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen. Japanese pressing of 2005 album scheduled to include one bonus track TBA. Wea.
Japanese version includes an exclusive bonus cut. As polished and professional as it was, Garbage's third album, Beautiful Garbage, killed whatever momentum the quartet had as the LP commercially crashed and burned not long after its fall 2001 release. Subsequently, the band faded out of view, taking a long hiatus before regrouping in 2004 to record their fourth album, Bleed Like Me, which was finally released in the spring of 2005. Although it was released halfway through the first decade of the 21st century, it belongs to the midpoint of the last decade of the 20th century, sounding like a virtual Cliff Notes of the sounds, themes, and styles of the post-grunge '90s. As they beefed up the guitars, the band have toned down some of the electronica underpinnings that have been present since their debut -- they've not been excised, merely subdued, so this is still recognizably the work of a group that called their second album Version 2.0 with their tongue firmly planted in cheek. But Garbage don't just hark back to their earlier work on Bleed Like Me, they conjure all kinds of ghosts from the '90s, building "Sex Is Not the Enemy" on a Kim Deal bassline, while pasting together a guitar riff straight off of Stone Temple Pilots' Purple and a chorus from Elastica's classic "Stutter" for the album's first single, "Why Do You Love Me." Other sounds of the '90s flutter throughout the album -- the title track reaches back even further, as its cavalcade of misfits uncannily recalls Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" in its structure, sentiment, and melody -- while lead ...
