With their self-titled debut, New York City's Zs whittle a pointy niche of their own on the big experimental rock. The EP is part of Troubleman Unlimited's Vothoc outsider music series, which is curated by Orthrelm mastermind Mick Barr. It features five tracks, all dominated by choppy, skittering intersections of percussion and tenor sax. Drummers Brad Wentworth and Alex Hoskins don't make a lot of racket, instead matching the blare of Alex Mincek and Sam Hillmer's saxophones with staccato, technically efficient taps. In between these players lies the odd chording of guitarists Charlie Looker and Matt Hough, who seem to follow neither rhythm nor melody, but nevertheless remain integral to Zs' literate racket. While the brief piece "Olympics" is pure fun, offering a snapshot of each musician darting into and out of the other's solo, it's the two longer works that really make an impression on Zs. The eight-plus minute "Slalom" finds the saxophonists and guitarists hitting a series of odd, interlocking chords as the percussion shifts the song's rate of speed back and forth. At one point cymbals arrive to add a little shrill chaos to the scene, but it's soon back to the geometric seesaw of pinging high and low notes. "Mimesis" starts out on a much subtler tip, with a sax breathing gently as the guitarists strike awkward chords. The saxophones' whale calls eventually coalesce into a sustained solo of sorts, before some piercing tones give way to even more empty and hesitant space. This deep in the song, it seems like the guitarists are daring the saxmen to make a strident move, and vice versa. It's captivating stuff, especially when the saxes do finally start to squawk, and the drummers make their own appearance at this improvisational showdown. ~ Johnny Loftus

Singer/songwriter Mark Geary came to NYC in 1995 with a one-way ticket from Dublin, $100 in his pocket, and a green card. Recognized today as one of the East Village's favorite performers, Geary started out playing with Jeff Buckley at the legendary Cafe Sine' (started by Mark's brother Karl) and has since opened for the likes of Elvis Costello, The Pretenders, Coldplay, Midnight Oil, The Pogues, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Strummer, Lloyd Cole, The Frames, the Saw Doctors, Beth Orton, and Billy Bragg. After being one of the last performers to play at the WTC as part of New York's popular Summer Stage concert series, Geary and actor Dennis Leary co-hosted a very successful star-studded 9-11 fundraiser at Arlene's Grocery. His songs have been featured in many independent films and a much anticipated debut album was supposed to have been released in 1999 by the now-defunct Paradigm Records. Two years later, film/TV producer Gill Holland became so enamored of Mark's music (not realizing until a live show that Mark Geary was NOT a famous Dublin resident, but in fact, Gill's local bartender) that he started put Mark in the studio and recorded a debut record which was released November 10, 2002. That week, Mark's song "Volunteer" hit the top ten on Today FM in Ireland, and in January 2003 Today FM named him the Witness Rising Artist of the Week. In February 2003, coinciding with the Irish release of the record, National Irish Television will air a one hour special on Mark, featuring seven songs performed solo. Since then, Mark has toured the globe and participated in music festivalsall over the world, highlighted by three years in a row at SXSW, CMJ, aswell as Lisdoonvarna and Oxygen in Ireland. Mark's 2005 releaseGhosts was voted Album of the Year (2005) by the Irish Voice and is nearingGold in Ireland. He has scored two films (2005's (Loggerheads and2006's Steel City) that were selected for Dramatic competition at theSundance Film Festival. Mark's music has been featured in countless T.V.shows and films and can be found on many compilations, including HearMusic's highly successful Starbucks compilation. -Citysearch says Mark is "part unself-righteous Elliot Smith, part multi-faceted Van Morrison" and that he "touches the heart the way David Gray wishes he could." -Time Out Magazine calls him "an engaging singer/songwriter...(who) writes delicate songs about love and defiance...(and) recalls performers such as Richard Thompson and John Lennon." -The Irish Voice hails his remarkable stage presence and calls ...

Or Give Me Death
Aqueduct Or Give Me Death CD  (2007)

ZS CD music
CD $11.75  Audio Samples
Musicians generally fall into two categories: people we, as listeners, look to as equals who candidly reflect our own experiences, and people we look to as authorities who provide us greater worldly understanding. Rarely do these two roles truly and effectively come together in one artist, one who both relates to the everyday trials of life but can also offer larger insights. David Terry, the man behind Aqueduct, is one of the few to whom this happens. From the first lines of Or Give Me Death -- "I've been a father to you all/In spite of what you've heard/And for the most part/I've been a perfect stranger too" -- on the brilliant opener, "Lying in the Bed I've Made" to the Beach Boys-esque ode to The Princess Bride "As You Wish," to the offhanded "People never change, bitch/Don't even try" in the Smoosh-rock of "Keep It Together," Terry writes jocularly sad and perceptive lyrics that play out over warm, thoughtfully composed, sometimes orchestral, pop chords. Yet despite the layers, the eclectic instrumentation (the combination of flugelhorn, his Wayne Coyne-esque squawk, synths, electric guitar, RJD2-ish piano line, and excitable strings in "Wasted Energy," for example), the album is not pretentious, overbearing, or even kitschy, much in part thanks to the persona that Terry has been able to create for himself. Or Give Me Death is fun yet serious, cheerful yet depressing, simple yet intricate, and Terry acts as both the Virgilian guide leading us through society and the slightly pathetic but endearingly imperfect ...
