| | American Lullaby CD
Ellipsis Arts' American Lullaby features renditions of traditional bedtime songs by a host of country, world, folk, jazz, and bluegrass artists, including Maria Muldaur, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer, and Beth Nielsen Chapman. Not surprisingly, this makes for a sweetly eclectic collection, spanning from Kathy Kallick's down to earth "Hobo's Lullaby" to the Moonlighters' "Resophonic Lullaby," which features languidly lovely Hawaiian steel guitars. The album's only drawback, if it can be called that, is that the performances are so detailed that it's hard to imagine falling asleep to them. More often than not, the simplest renditions of these songs are also the best: Suzy Thompson's "Mama Loves" uses just mandolins, fiddle, and voice to create a hypnotic lullaby. Likewise, David Grisman and Tony Price's "Song for Two Pamelas" makes for a beautiful and restful duet between the mandolinist and guitarist. Other highlights include Bill Staines' rugged "Home on the Range," Sweet Honey in the Rock's "Hush L'il Baby," and Mulebone UK's "My Creole Belle." Lovingly crafted and a joy to listen to, American Lullaby is a worthwhile collection of rustic, restful music for children and adults alike. ~ Heather Phares

American Lullaby CD music
$10.65 Original score by Miles Goodman. All songs written by Paul Williams.
The Muppet Christmas Carol movie and soundtrack will inevitably draw comparison to previous Muppet efforts, considering this is the first film since Jim Henson's death. Luckily Paul Williams, the songwriter of The Muppet Movie, is on hand to provide some sense of attachment and familiarity. And of course, the rest of the Muppet gang are around too. Williams' score is not as striking as his work with The Muppet Movie, but he has crafted an extensive package of Christmas cheer with 11 new songs and a charming score. Two of the songs, "Room in Your Heart" and "Chairman of the Board," did not appear in the actual film, so they really serve as bonus tracks. The song "Marley and Marley," sung by living dead versions of the heckling Waldorf and Statler, is humorous, eerie, and poignant, reminding the still living that "Freedom comes from giving love as prison comes with hate." "Bless Us All," sung by ...

American Lullaby songs
$11.75 Kevin Tihista is an immensely talented singer/songwriter, but his previous albums have occasionally had a somewhat precious, studied quality. Like Tihista's first three albums, Home Demons, Vol. 1 consists almost entirely of solo home recordings, but this collection of early takes, alternate versions, amusing experiments, and orphaned songs is considerably more low-key. From Tihista's gently self-mocking liner notes to oddball inclusions like "#32" (a pretty trumpet and piano instrumental that suddenly turns into a blast of Carl ...

American Lullaby music CDs
$15.99 Recorded and filmed at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall in England at the end of their 2004 tour, this CD/DVD set is one of the band's strongest performances ever, featuring stunning renditions of their classics.
With 2006's live album LONG JOURNEY HOME arriving two full decades after their indie debut WHITES OFF EARTH NOW, Canadian alt-country superstars the Cowboy Junkies proved to be still going strong. Although the narcotic blend of country twang and slowcore moodiness that's implicit in their name has never left the band's music, the Cowboy Junkies have developed ...
