| | Songs Ohia Magnolia Electric Co. CD (2003)
Three CD music
$12.29 From the very beginning, there was always a certain blue-collar quality to Jason Molina's songs, a working-class element informing his lyrics. But nowhere is it more visible than on Magnolia Electric Co., the seventh Songs: Ohia album. The assured, denim-clad, '70s rock feel of the album positions it on the dark edge of town, in the neighborhood of Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bob Seger. But these are no bombastic anthems like the songs of those populist rousers. Molina remains subjective and confessional in tone even when singing, "Someone must have set 'em up/Now they'll be working in the cold gray rock/Now they'll be working in the hot mill steam/Now they'll be working in the concrete," as he does on the incredible seven-plus minute opener, "Farewell ...
| | Damien Jurado Where Shall You Take Me? CD (2003)
Three music CDs
$10.59 Arriving just a year after the surprisingly eclectic and electric rock of I Break Chairs, Damien Jurado's Where Shall You Take Me? is something of a return -- but not a retreat -- to the moody minimalism of albums like Ghost of David. Songs like "Amateur Night" and "Omaha" share the acoustic strumming and rustic, shuffling rhythms of his earlier work, but also have a subtly polished confidence that brings out the warmth in Jurado's singing and playing as never before. The country and folk elements always present ...

| | Dave Pajo Hole Of Burning Alms CD (2004)
Three album
$16.15 David Pajo's legacy as Papa M/Aerial M/M Is the Thirteenth Letter/M is now much easier to grapple with thanks to Drag City's collection of singles released under various monikers by various labels. Sounding something like a more organic Tortoise, Pajo layers different simple parts onto deceptively simple melodies, constantly moving the music forward but doing it in a completely unhurried fashion. The first four tracks are just guitars, bass, and drums (as are most of the tunes, for that matter). The fifth track, on the other hand, starts with a simple generated rhythm, bubbly synth, and some kind of triggered flute sound. This could almost be the work of another artist, until the guitar parts start and you can hear the same ...
| | Okkervil River Black Sheep Boy CD (2005)
Three CD music
$10.15 Okkervil River continue to break the glass between messy nerves and orchestrated elegance on their fourth full-length, Black Sheep Boy, titled after the lovely song penned by Tim Hardin with which the band opens the record. However, their take on the song feels a bit rushed and uneventful, which knocks the tender breath from the lyrics and presents a clumsy start. Opening the record this way is the singular yet major complaint of the album, ironically pushing "Black Sheep Boy," the intended centerpiece, to the outskirts of the album's overall feel. Thankfully, the song spans only a short ...
| | Eddie & The Hot Rods Teenage Depression CD (1976) (Import) Import; Canada
Three music CDs
$19.39 Though they were a crucial factor in the birth of British punk, by the time the Sex Pistols and the Clash exploded onto the scene, Eddie & the Hot Rods were already fading into obscurity. Along with peers like Dr. Feelgood and the Kursaal Flyers, they helped create the British pub-rock sound of the mid-'70s, a sound exemplified by TEENAGE DEPRESSION. Like UK bands a decade earlier, Eddie & the Hot Rods updated American R&B, with a harder edge and no-nonsense approach that was at odds with the prog-rock then ruling the roost.
Covers of Joe Tex ("Show Me") ...

| | Nothing Comes Easy CD (2007) (Import) United Kingdom
Three CD music
$15.95 "20 Hard-Edged Stompers From The British Beat Era!" proclaims the front cover artwork for this collection (assembled by Nick Saloman of the Bevis Frond) of rare U.K. single sides released between 1964 and 1966. Trouble is, previous little of the material on Nothing Comes Easy sounds all that hard-edged or stomping compared to what the Kinks, the Rolling Stones or the Yardbirds were doing at the time, not to mention any number of far raunchier American garage bands. Despite that, for fans of the lesser tributaries of the British pop scene in the mid-'60s there are some real ...
