After a number of collaborative, guest-star-studded albums, Tricky has finally gone back to the basics with VUNERABLE. Replacing his former muse Martina Topley Bird is Constanza, whose breathy voice sounds remarkably like both her precursor and ex-Golden Palomino Lori Carson. An album in the mold of his acclaimed debut MAXINQUAYE, this outing features rock-tinged trip-hop with Constanza's airy singing often doubled by Tricky's spoken-word accompaniment. In the resulting sea of submerged beats, chilled-out covers of XTC's "Dear God" and the Cure's "The Love Cats" surface, blending well with tracks such as "Stay," "Antimatter," and "Wait for God." Tricky also cuts loose on a handful of guitar-heavy tracks, including "How High," "Moody," and "Where I'm From." Although the apocalyptic tones of his first few releases are largely absent, VUNERABLE shows that Tricky still has an edge, and continues to deftly span the genres of pop, hip-hop, electronica, and rock.

Vulnerable Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) trick... grown up Contrary to other reviews, i think this album shows maturity over Tricky's earlier work.
It darker, more listenable.. and definately sexier. The sounds and vocals are a lot more complex, and they gel really well in each track, deliverying a dirty, deep sexy sound. I great album when you want to escape a little... or when your feeling a little.. vulnerable. Great work... some of Tricky's best. Submitted by ipek80 (Sydney, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? an awful fall from grace well i was hoping that this album would see an improvement on his stuff just prior to this that would see the standard get back up to that of the standard on his debut "maxinquaye". that album is truely sensational, but the rest of his stuff just gets worse and worse as it goes along. this, unfortunately is no exception to the trend. why has his voice changed so much - it was clean and good back in the days of his appearances on fellow bristolians' massive attacks albums "blue lines" and "protection" and debut "maxinquaye". now his voice is rough, growley fake and painful to listen to. i have never known of such a fall from grace from start to present. my advice to anyone is to buy his early stuff and the stuff he did with massive attack. do not buy this as it is not even a shadow of his former glory. awful, such a shame Submitted by josemorrisinio (Bristol, England) Was This Review Helpful? Vulnerable album
$11.59 On the heels of Swami Records' reissues by Testors and Crime, Basement Anthology: 1976-84 -- which chronicles overlooked recordings by Syracuse's the Penetrators -- just may be the label's best look at the past to date. Inspired by 1960s garage punks, not to mention the Stooges, attitude abounds on these old dusty singles and live recordings steered by scene-makers Eliot Kagan and Jack Lipton. The sloppy swagger of 1979's "Teenage Lifestyle" single doesn't discount it from anthem status, but "Baby Dontcha Tell Me," recorded in 1976, is the real secret weapon here, sounding as if it were extracted from the Nuggets compilation. If "#1 Band in Town" is arrogant, it's also nasty, dirty fun, as is the group's live rendition of Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music." Sure, there's a sameness to the material after a while, but because it's so spirited, Basement Anthology: 1976-84 wins more than it loses. ~ John D. Luerssen
Based on an actual unbiased CD review linked below. Many albums are reissued for "reasons" -- Band X was ahead of its time, criminally underappreciated, influential yet out of print, blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda. And there was definitely something cool about Swami reissuing our stuff on an ENHANCED CD. The SYRACUSE PENETRATORS were centered around Eliot ("Spike") Kagan and Jack ("Penetrator") Lipton, whose own solo CD is also available here at CDBABY.(***** See additional note below. *****) We released four vinyl singles and EP's on our own local label Fred Records; ...
