Their 1972 debut album is as good as any rock 'n' roll album released that year in our humble opinion. Collectors' Choice. 2003.
From the ashes of the multifaceted jazz/psych/rock combo Spirit rose Jo Jo Gunne. The band's personnel included Jay Ferguson (keyboards/lead vocals), Mark Andes (bass/vocals), his brother Matthew Andes (guitar/vocals), and Curly Smith (drums/vocals). Their self-titled debut would be the only release from this lineup as well as arguably the strongest of the four efforts to bear the Jo Jo Gunne moniker. Commencing with the upbeat pop of "Run Run Run," this album builds upon Ferguson's well-established melodic tradition, which is immeasurably enhanced by the power trio's aggressive instrumentation and arrangements. Sides such as "Shake That Fat," "I Make Love," and "99 Days" epitomize the heavy boogie rock of the early '70s. While Matthew Andes' contributions are a far cry from the flashy fretwork of Jimmy Page, he ably manages some solid leads and equally memorable riffs, such as the catchy introduction to "Babylon" or the laid-back "Flying Home" -- which could be mistaken for a long-lost Outlaws or Lynyrd Skynyrd tune. The band's versatility is continually evident throughout, with the funky and soulful "Academy Award" suggesting the influence of Little Feat. The languid propulsion of "Take It Easy" -- which shouldn't be confused with the Jackson Browne composition -- develops nicely into a midtempo groover that is again driven by Andes' fluid guitar solos. Although Jo Jo Gunne would issue another three long-players, they would each feature a slightly different personnel, with Smith being the first to jump ship prior to the band's follow-up, Bite Down Hard (1973). In 2000 both LPs were compiled -- along with a trio of previously unissued bonus tracks from the Jo Jo Gunne (1972) sessions, onto the Asylum Recordings: Jo Jo Gunne + Bite Down Hard (2000) single-CD two-fer. In 2003 both titles also became available (sans bonus tracks) separately from Collectors' Choice Music. ~ Lindsay Planer

Jo Jo Gunne Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews the best of four Jo Jo Gunne was the classic hippie-boogie band of the early seventies. Leader Jay Ferguson had established himself as a solid song writer with Spirit and formed a tight, creative outfit with Jo Jo Gunne (named after a Chuck Berry song). Of their four studio albums, their self-titled debut was the best with the fourth, "So Where's The Show?" running a close second. I had a chance to see them in '74 when they came down to Louisiana. They were just a great band, period. Ferguson found a very good co-writer in Matthew Andes and the duo turned out their biggest hit with "Run, Run, Run." This album is full of good songs, "Shake That Fat", "Barstow Blue Eyes", and "Take It Easy" among the highlights. For a record that was probably recorded badly, Collectors' Choice does a great job at remastering this disc to a good sound quality. This is one of those records that takes me back to my bedroom during high school with black lights and posters on the wall. Far Out! Jo Jo Gunne CD Purchase Delivery and response was excellent. The CD itself was in good shape and of course the music is great. Submitted by jblake (Houston, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Dated Boogie Rock After a hot opening track "Run Run Run" the band never quite figures out where to go. As with most boogie bands from the '70s, the lyrics are annoying banal. If you're just looking for mindless rock & roll (like Foghat) this album is as good as any. Submitted by krech (Mifflinburg, PA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Jo Jo Gunne album
$7.95 Captain Beyond is a one-of-a-kind progressive album with rock, heavy metal, and jazz influences with a "space rock" lyrical bend. Formed by former members of Deep Purple (Rod Evans, vocals), Iron Butterfly (Rhino, lead guitar, and Lee Dorman, bass), and Johnny Winter (Bobby Caldwell, drums) Captain Beyond is an album that flows from riff to riff, drumbeat to drumbeat, often with various time signatures within the same song. Taking a tip from the Moody Blues, songs flow directly into each other without benefit of any lag time between selections. Taken as a whole, the album is kind of a rush, as quick, riff-laden guitar lines predominate for a few songs before slowing down temporarily into a lull until the next takeoff. Lyrically, the album differentiates itself by exploring themes of the outer world and meanings of existence, often with references to the moon, sea, sun, and so on. Listeners may get the feeling of taking a journey to space in a rocket ship headed for destination unknown. Musically, the album is superior in all aspects. Rod Evans has a strong rock voice, Rhino plays an enormous amount of hook-laden ...

| | Jo Jo Gunne Bite Down Hard CD (1973)
Jo Jo Gunne music CDs
$11.59 Bite Down Hard is more aggressive hard pop from Jay Ferguson, the ex-Spirit member's keyboards and songs dominating the groups second LP. It's boogie rock much like Edgar Winter's White Trash, borderline Southern rock by way of the West Coast a year after the group's well-crafted hit single "Run Run Run" and four years before Ferguson would find his way to "Thunder Island." As the three-piece Spirit featuring Randy California and Ed Cassidy needed the elements that John Locke and Jay Ferguson brought to the table, so too Jo Jo Gunne lacks the eccentricities of Cass and California. "60 Minutes to Go" is a perfect example; it is a riff that Willie Alexander released on MCA as "Rock & Roll Riff #78," but Alexander instills the left-field stuff that puts it over the top. The same riff in Ferguson's hands is blasé. The really strange thing is that it is highly improbable that either musician heard of the other, and that even some of the melody of the verse is similar is remarkable. Bill Szmczyk does an good job of capturing the sound with his engineering/production work, but where the Staehely Brothers' version of Spirit showed immense promise, the Spirit three piece and Jo Jo Gunne fragments from the original model are clearly two halves of a whole. The psychological ...
| | Blues Image Open CD (1970)
Jo Jo Gunne songs
$11.49 Blues Image's second album was their most successful, in large part because of the inclusion of their huge hit single "Ride Captain Ride." The rest of the record, however, shows them to be a band in search of a more individual voice, borrowing heavily as it does from Jimi Hendrix ("Love Is the Answer," "Pay My Dues"), Creedence Clearwater Revival ("Running the Water"), any number of average blues-rock bands ("Clean Love"), and the Latin-rock fusion of Santana ("La Bamba," "Consuelate," and the instrumental "Wrath of Daisey"). Those familiar only with "Ride Captain Ride" might be surprised at the band's versatility, which took in blues, Latin, and hard rock, though not in as even or striking a mixture as, say, Santana. It's a pedestrian form of versatility, though, with none of the other songs possessing the pop hooks of "Ride Captain Ride." The 2004 CD reissue on Sundazed adds historical liner notes with quotes from guitarist Mike Pinera and percussionist Joe Lala. ~ Richie Unterberger

| | Jo Jo Gunne Jumpin' The Gunne CD (1973)
Jo Jo Gunne album
$11.59 Jay Ferguson wrote all ten of the songs on Jumpin' the Gunne, an album produced by Bill Szymczyk and the third disc by this offshoot of the group Spirit's. By this time, Mark Andes was gone -- he would join Firefall and later Heart -- leaving his brother Matt Andes on guitar and Jay Ferguson on keyboards, lead vocals, and second guitar, and leaving them to their own devices. There is just something that doesn't catch on here. "At the Spa" and "Monkey Music" both have their moments, but in these grooves there is none of the intensity of their first hit "Run Run Run" or Ferguson's later signature tune, "Thunder Island," which came during the middle of Firefall's string of hits. "To the Island" isn't "Thunder Island" by any stretch, while "Getaway" sounds a bit like a Doobie Brothers outtake. Jo Jo Gunne was a decent concert pairing opening for the Doobies after their Run Run Run debut LP. The sounds on "Couldn't Love You Better" pretty much sum up this disc -- nondescript album rock with an LP cover which is the most politically incorrect sight you can imagine. All four bandmembers are in a big brass bed staring at the ceiling where a large and flabby woman is floating through the room while a small pig looks up at her. On the inside cover the pig and the large woman are nose to nose, and the album credits are written on the woman the way you see cuts of beef written out on a drawing of a cow at a butcher shop. If this is supposed to ...

Jo Jo Gunne music CDs
$11.39 Hugh Burns, the critically acclaimed musician known for his work with avant-garde jazz outfit The Lonely Bears, releases a very special collection of smooth jazz tracks: Synchromatic on Acoustic Masters, July 2004.Synchromatic is a collection of original music inspired by the spontaneity of fifties and sixties studio recordings. This album seeks to capture the atmosphere of ensemble recording typical of earlier eras whilst using the best studio technology available today; creating a bridge between classic jazz roots and twenty-first century style. Seeking to emulate the mood created by the classic Blue Note and Riverside albums, Hugh Burns fuses the late-night moods and improvisational quality of earlier jazz recordings with a contemporary harmonic language. The album's title - Synchromatic - name checks the Gretsch Synchromatic C400 archtop guitar that featured on this recording. This particular guitar, fitted with a Dan Armstrong magnetic pick up and a Fishman archtop bridge pickup, has a unique sound. The album features eleven songs: six self-penned by Hugh, ...
