Fountains Of Wayne was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. "Stacy's Mom" was nominated for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
Following a four-year hiatus that found Fountains of Wayne going from Atlantic Records to S-Curve Records, New Jersey's favorite power-pop outfit delivers WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS, the band's third opus. FOW does an excellent job of capturing the suburban zeitgeist that dates back to the band's name (derived from a Garden State backyard fixtures emporium) and carrying on from 1999's excellent UTOPIA PARKWAY.
Wielding boatloads of hooks and harmonies, Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood delight with songs about high school sweethearts (the melancholy "Hackensack"), a good woman's love in the face of a crap job (a sweet, semi-acoustic "Hey Julie"), and exploding cell phones (an anthemic "Mexican Wine"). With its handclaps, rad harmonies and perky synths, the irresistible "Stacy's Mom" fantasizes about a best friend's mom, and seems tailor-made for any future American Pie sequels. Other pop manna includes the Beatlesque "Fire Island," the country-fried "Hung Up On You" (featuring guest lap steel player Robert Randolph), and the Brit-pop psychedelia of "No Better Place." WELCOME INTERSTATE MANAGERS easily notches a place on any Best of 2003 list.

Fountains Of Wayne Welcome Interstate Managers Songs Welcome Interstate Managers Music Welcome Interstate Managers Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews what is it about alberta? Even a cursory listen to any Fountains of Wayne record instantly affirms their brilliance at composition, musicianship, arranging and production. It's incredibly rare to find beautifully-crafted pop this sublime. To find pop with as much emotional depth as some of their work is even rarer. To have the additional ability to be sublime pop and/or rock-and-roll purveyors while being aware of the quirks and limitations of those forms and making fun of them at the same time, well, Fountains Of Wayne are the only outfit capable. We'll have to assume that "jp in italy" doesn't speak English well enough to understand the lyrics. But even if that's the case, the hooks are entertaining enough in their own right to be captivating. Unless you're an idiot, of course, which may be the case. As for "quantconscious" in Alberta, well, s/he merely perpetuates the stereotype that just about everybody in that Godforsaken province is suffering from Homer Simpson syndrome, believing that "rock achieved perfection in 1974." Thanks, redneck ignoramus. Submitted by JJ Hunsecker (conveniently located in Midtown) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great This a great CD from a great band. People who are into quirky, strange, but good music, but have heard "Stacy's Mom" may write them off as just another pop clone, but in reality "Stacy's Mom" was not a very good representation of the band. I have all their CDs, and this may be their best one yet, definitely the most diverse. Submitted by hopecraycat (peekskill,NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Way More than just "Stacy's Mom" A great CD from start to finish, full of catchy pop tunes, either infused with amusing, tongue-in-cheek, irony ("Bright Future in Sales", "Stacy's Mom") or with a straight forward, almost innocent sincerity ("Valley Winter Song", "Hey Julie") or sometimes both ("Mexican Wine"). Incredible two and three part harmonies. Influences of sixties and seventies bands can be heard from the obvious Beach Boys, and Beatles influences, to occasional similarities to Steely Dan, and even the Flying Burrito Brothers--but with a modern take and novel approach. Very highly recommended! Submitted by JK (Norfolk, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
America's Best Pop Rock Band? FOW has been producing irresistable melodies for years now. Like so many of the bands I love, I figured they were doomed to obscurity. But then they released 'Managers,'easily their most cohesive and emotional record, and people seemed to notice. If 'Staci's Mom' is the only track you've heard, you're missing out on a special experience. The music covers vast territory, referring mostly to 80's synth pop and rock, and touching on country and 70's R&B. FOW successfully pay homage to great bands of the time without ever resorting to cheap mimicry. The lyrics, meanwhile conjure up vivid imagery and earn an occasional chuckle while remaining utterly clever and completely earnest. This is definitely one of the best records of 2003. FOW does it again FOW does it again! Probably their most interesting and diverse album yet. If you liked the first two, you'll love this one. Submitted by a reviewer (Chicago, IL, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
