This import set from the BR imprint is essentially the same as Polygram International's Collection from 1995. The sequence of Singles is slightly altered, and it includes live versions of "End of the World" and "Lontano Dagli Occhi," as well as the studio track "Pathenon," but other than that the two releases are identical. Both offer the hit singles "Rain and Tears" and "Break," as well as a run through the group's Mediterranean take on psychedelia and highlights of 1972's high-concept 666 -- widely considered to be Aphrodite's Child's finest hour. ~ Johnny Loftus
Double disc collection of singles and more from BR Music for the Greek prog-rock trio which spawned the solo artists Vangelis & Demis Roussos. 38 tracks & a full-color glossy booklet with track by track credits. Standard double jewelcase. 2003.

Singles + album
$7.75 Subtitled "A Pythagorean Theory Tale," Stevens' follow-up to the relatively conventional BUDDHA AND THE CHOCOLATE BOX is a semi-concept album with a sort of science fiction theme. The songs are set on the faraway planet Polygor, which "existed to give numbers to the universe," and they are sung from the point of prominent inhabitants of the planet, including the wise and deep-thinking old Novim ("Novim's Nightmare") and cranky emperor Monad ("Monad's Anthem"). The story line ...
| | Jethro Tull Passion Play CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Enhanced CD
Singles + CD music
$9.99 Led by Ian Anderson, Jethro Tull had commercial and (varying) critical success with BENEFIT, AQUALUNG and THICK AS A BRICK. However, it was after 1973's A PASSION PLAY, a musically and thematically bold "concept" album, that the band seemed alarmed by the critics' nibbling little pens. Anderson was reportedly so wearied by critics' vitriol that he announced he would never tour again--but did a year later. (Despite the critical hostility, A PASSION PLAY soared to No. 1 in the U.S.).
Musically and lyrically dense, A PASSION PLAY features Anderson's enigmatic lyrics sprinkled with biblical references, and Tull's sprightly mix of minstrel-style English folk with electrified, prog rock overtones. Some may find the CD issue--which doesn't delineate ...
| | Jethro Tull Songs From The Wood CD (1977) Remastered
Singles + music CDs
$9.99 In terms of rustic, tights-wearing, elf-loving, flute-heavy, British/Celtic folk-tinged '70s prog-rock, SONGS FROM THE WOOD is the most Tull of all Jethro Tull albums. By 1977 the band had ventured far enough from its heavy blues-rock beginnings to create a completely unique, idiosyncratic sound, filled with European folk mythology, rural imagery and an endearing combination of art-rock and British folk-rock. Elaborate synthesizer fanfares mix with delicate acoustic guitar tapestries, complex arrangements and odd time signatures. SONGS FROM THE WOOD strikes the perfect balance between the proggie ambition ...

| | Nik Freitas Here's Laughing At You CD (2002)
Singles + album
$12.49 Like a less sentimental, updated Emitt Rhodes, Nik Freitas, professional photographer and occasional drummer for San Franciscan labelmates For Stars, offers up a grab bag of pop delights on his first solo album, to which the modifiers D.I.Y., indie, and Beatlesque all suitably apply. Regarding the former characterization, Here's Laughing at You originated almost completely (and coincidentally) on a Rhodes organ in a small, typically untended twenty-something's room, a clutter that makes its way into the music, and to the music's benefit. Freitas was responsible for most of the notes, too, although he was assisted in the production -- one of the album's most idiosyncratic elements -- by childhood friend and occasional bandmate Aaron Estes, who also lent a hand to various performance aspects. As for the latter description, the songwriting certainly isn't as consequential as Lennon and McCartney, but it is distinctive and adventurous, tweaking song structures just so and taking chances, and it follows in the ...
