Although the Poor have been portrayed as a great lost band from the 1960s, the evidence on this short collection, which brings together the four singles they recorded between 1966 and 1968, as well as two singles released by the Soul Survivors, a nascent version of the band, between 1965 and 1966, suggests that the talent certainly was there, but unfortunately not the material. Randy Meisner (who went on to play a key role in both Poco and the Eagles), Pat Shanahan, and Allen Kemp (who both ended up in New Riders of the Purple Sage) were all members of the Poor, and the tracks here show definite potential, with beautiful, high harmonies that fall somewhere between the folk-rock feel of the Beau Brummels and the sunshine pop of the Association. All that was really missing in the mix were some quality songs, and it's telling that a pair of Shanahan compositions, "I Can't Stand to Be in Love with You" and the delicate "Snow Man," both recorded before the Poor existed, are two of the more memorable moments here. Kemp's "How Many Tears," which sounds like a watered-down version of the Byrds (circa Gene Clark), also has its moments, as does the mildly psychedelic "My Mind Goes High" and the ornate, orchestrated "Study in Motion No. 1" (drawn from the soundtrack for Hell's Angels on Wheels) that closes the disc. But nothing really lingers in the mind after this album ends, and while the potential of this band is clear, they ultimately didn't even come close to realizing it. By all accounts the Poor were an amazing live band, but their recorded output reveals a gifted but fairly generic group without a strong personal identity. Fans of late-'60s sunshine pop and the first stirrings of what would later become L.A.'s version of country-rock may well enjoy this set for its historical and archival value, however. ~ Steve Leggett

4 stars Good obscure 1960's group finally reissued
This is a really good reissue of all known recordings by The Poor and their earilier incarnation, The Soul Survivors. (For the record, The Poor actually had one near hit, "She's Got The Time" actually got some airplay and bubbled until the Top 100 for a few weeks in 1967.) Sound is good, all mono (that's a shame), and although the notes claimed that all of these tracks are alternates of the original singles, I compared by 45 of "She's Got The Time" and it sound exactly the same to me. Notes are good, but this reissue is missing the original 45 issue information. Highly recommended for anyone who loves 1960's garage bands.

Undertones Sin Of Pride CD  (1983)

Poor
CD $12.49
The Sin of Pride was by far the most exploratory album the Undertones ever issued and, other than their debut, fares the best. Whereas Hypnotised had been another punk rave-up album and Positive Touch had been a psychedelic outing, The Sin of Pride was a deep look into the soul music of the '60s done with a post-punk sensibility. Obviously, ABC and Paul Weller's Style Council were reference points on this trail, but O'Neill's own way of hearing created a kind of psychedelic soul that was very different in approach and execution than either of those chart-topping acts. Covers such as Leon Ware's "Got to Have You Back," which opens the LP, and Smokey Robinson's "Save Me," which closes it, are bookends for a moving blend of funky, driving, deeply textured ...
Gathering Dust, Rare & Unreleased, Vol. 2
Kyle Vincent Gathering Dust, Rare & Unreleased, Vol. 2 CD  (2006)

Poor
CD $12.15
This "new" album from Kyle Vincent is actually a collection of unreleased tracks, with "some new, some old, some live, one in Spanish", and all with one thing in common: That voice. Undeniably one of pop music's best kept secrets of the last 10 years or so, Vincent's vocal pipes shine on tracks that never managed to make it to a "real" album before. Now the question is: Who in the world decided some of these songs weren't up to par to be included on any of his previous albums? Whereas usually an artist or a record company will put out any old collection of crud just to cash in on the holiday rush, there's not a clunker among these. This is a solid effort where most tracks sound as fresh as if they were all recorded yesterday. The liners say that Vincent "tweaked" some of the old ones, but it doesn't say which are old and which are new. I'm guessing that's intentional, and it works, because the listener is hard-pressed to figure it all out. Most sound like they were cut at the same recording session, save for a few that are obvious demos, tape hiss and all. But even those are a pleasure to listen to, and will be a treat especially for Vincent's dedicated fan base. Kyle goes back to his power pop roots (he was the lead singer of the seminal 80's hair band, "Candy")on several tracks; doesn't abandon his affinity for the grandiose ballad on a couple, and effortlessly sings his guts out on just about every second of this disc. Most fun, and perhaps most interesting moments are the live tracks that are culled from his days as the opening act for Barry Manilow. These may be a bit dated, understandable as they are now over a decade old, but it's still an enjoyable listen to hear the energy of a large arena audience reacting to Vincent's music. Highlights: "When You Were A Child" is a heart-stopping poignant ode to how we forget the simple things that filled our youth. Vincent does his best Neil Diamond on "It's Just A Song", in fact, someone ought to get this song to Neil right away."Jonesin' For Zilah" is a straight ahead power pop gem with some great background vocals. "Save Me" is almost more Elton than Elton, and "I Don't Wanna Know" is almost more Eric Carmen than Eric Carmen. That's not to say that Vincent is just a derivative artist, ...
Rise From The Ashes
Stone Coyotes Rise From The Ashes CD  (2003)

Poor
CD $12.65  Audio Samples
"House of Confusion" has a bed of sparse rockabilly guitar under the distinctive voice of Barbara Keith to open 2003's Rise from the Ashes, another good collection of tunes from the Tibbles family of Western Massachusetts. With references to Marc Bolan's "20th Century Boy" one can hear the retro T. Rex riff taking center stage, kind of like Bolan doing battle with Robert Gordon and the Stray Cats. The vocal rap is mellow, oozing over the rugged '50s guitar line and the resulting product is as intriguing as "Rock Harder Than You," another gritty composition that producers Chinn & Chapman would no doubt love to get their hands on. With an off-gold phoenix proudly on the cover and an elegant 16-page booklet of lyrics inside, Keith, with some help from husband/drummer Doug Tibbles, composes all 13 titles, in the style the fans have come to expect from this eclectic trio. It's the ballads on this disc, though, that really stand out, and the authoritative "The Sailor's Song" with its graceful tones proves that point. Keith is a master of melancholy melody and her descriptive words glide along the accompaniment with her trademark ardor. It's a great song topped only by the final track, "Adriana," a tremendous narrative in the vein of "Free the People," though without the gospel. The former vocalist from Boston area band Kangaroo with John Hall could be speaking of herself in "The Phoenix" with its "wings of gold" hook; and where Tracy Chapman will engage the audience by "Telling Stories" with large production, the Stone Coyotes team keep it simple letting Mama Tibbles multi-track her voice on a tune that Linda Ronstadt could easily launch into the stratosphere. On second thought, it's the Eagles who should pick up on "Your Hour to Sing," material very much along their lines though with a bit more edge than that venerable unit has mustered in awhile. They could also pick up on "Ain't Nobody Home," another strong essay from Keith's perpetual fountain of melodies. Rise ...
