This 1975 first outing by the late rock-guitar virtuoso Tommy Bolin includes "Homeward Strut," "Marching Power" and "Lotus." After performing in a variety of bands since the late '60s, Bolin finally released his first solo album in 1975. Teaser is an impressive display of the guitarist's prowess and range, and is a natural progression from the previous Bolin-dominated James Gang albums Bang and Miami and his work with drummer Billy Cobham. The album features heavy doses of jazz-rock fusion (furthered by guests Jan Hammer, Dave Sanborn, and Michael Walden) in the instrumentals "Homeward Strut" and "Marching Powder," and straight-ahead rock in tracks like "The Grind." Bolin was always equally adept at subtleties, and the ballad "Dreamer" and the exotic "Savannah Woman" (with percussion from Phil Collins) represent this stylistic range here. Overshadowed historically by his guitar dynamics, Bolin's understated yet strong vocals are another selling point. CELTIC WOMAN is the brainchild of David Downes, a composer/conductor who was heavily involved with the American production of RIVERDANCE. Not surprisingly, all of the lights, drama, and musical bombast of that esteemed show are present on this production as well. Instead of showcasing legions of dancers, however, CELTIC WOMAN puts the emphasis on the rich heritage of traditional and contemporary Irish music, as performed by five talented female performers from varying musical backgrounds. Though the melodies are often extremely simple and unadorned, the production is just as lush and majestic as anything on Yanni's LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS, and should appeal to fans of that disc. Although he's known as one of the great latter-day soul singers, Clay spent much of his adolescence in a touring gospel group with his family; on this album, he returns to his roots. It's mostly traditional fare, heavy on the piano and Hammond organ, although a few tunes have a mid '70s disco groove. In any case, Clay sings all of them with a gorgeous mixture of passion and delicacy. His voice brings to mind, inevitably, Sam Cooke's work with the Soul Stirrers, in particular on "Every Road (Got to End Somewhere).
