| | Tito Puente Cuban Carnival CD Tito Puente Discography of CDs
Tito Puente became the most famous practitioner of salsa during the 1950s because he brought Afro-Cuban music out of the barrio and into the living rooms of all Americans. The Mambo King is captured on CUBAN CARNIVAL during his rise to stardom. Recorded in 1955 and 1956, this album highlights Puente's fiery early years.
CUBAN CARNIVAL documents the New York City salsa "sound" excellently. Not only are listeners treated to 11 authentic Latin selections, they get a sense of where Puente might be heading conceptually. For example, "Yambeque" is not only an up-tempo montuno, but it is also a vehicle for Puente's experiments with jazz. Midway through the track, a bebop tenor saxophone solo seems to pop out of nowhere before it slides back into the dense Latin percussion textures. "Cha-Cha De Los Pollos" switches gears entirely, embracing the now-celebrated cha-cha feel--a style that became very popular on the dance floor during this era. "Cuban Fantasy" is another strong composition, and this track features Puente on vibraphone. A cool-toned alto sax solo (a la Paul Desmond) firmly establishes the jazzy underpinnings of this exuberant track.
This is part of BMG's "Tropical" series.
Recorded between 1955 & 1956.

Cuban Carnival album
$14.55 A veteran tenor saxophonist who gained early recognition for his work with the Lennie Tristano school, Ted Brown has remained fairly obscure despite his consistent creativity. This superior trio set with the great bebop pianist Hod O'Brien and bassist Jacques Schols, features Brown at the top of his form. Other than his own "Smog Eyes" and the lesser-known "Trane's Slo Blues," all of the tunes are familiar bebop standards, but Brown, O'Brien, and Schols uplift and infuse them with fresh ideas. Among the more memorable selections ...
| | Tito Puente Top Percussion CD (1957)
Cuban Carnival CD music
$7.69 TOP PERCUSSION presents Afro-Cuban music in its purest form, with 11 of the 12 tracks recorded by a group of the finest Cuban and Puerto Rican musicians working in New York in the 1950s. Each side of the original album was recorded on a separate occasion, and they each offer a distinct flavor of the Afro-Cuban experience.
The first side showcases a powerhouse percussion ensemble led by Puente and featuring Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo. Puente's supple timbale work drives a series of complex 6/8 rhythms thoroughly rooted in the African call-and-response tradition.
The second side of the original album spotlights Puente's combustive timbale work. The master drummer demonstrates the classic fire and dynamic control which have made him such an enduring role model for generations of timbaleros. The concluding track, "Night Ritual," is a fascinating ...
