"Red Dirt Road" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Country Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
That Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn have rediscovered their roots is obvious from the first chords of RED DIRT ROAD's opening track "You Can't Take the Honky Tonk Out of the Girl." It's down-home country with a little bit of rock & roll, a refreshing lack of Nashville gloss, and an exuberant chorus (one of the background vocalists is Bekka Bramlett, daughter of Delanie & Bonnie, and the album resurrects some of that duo's Southern spirit).
The title track is a classic; all the timeless country elements are here--a bit of religion, a bit of mayhem, and a hearty dose of unapologetic sentimentality, blended together with the duo's trademark harmonies and an impeccable country-rock beat. The regretful, gospel-tinged "I Used to Know This Song By Heart" tugs at the heartstrings, while "When We Were Kings" borrows from Bruce Springsteen in its conjuring of greasy, rebellious, gloriously misspent youth. A healthy lack of studio trickery and back-to-basics instrumentation highlights Brooks & Dunn's ready way with a lyric and provides an intimate backdrop to RED DIRT ROAD's classy country.

Most know Jolie Holland as a member of Vancouver's the Be Good Tanyas. Catalpa is her first album, but it wasn't recorded as such. It had been a demo recording passed around to fans until Neume reviewed it on the internet. The venerable upstart label Anti has given it the proper release it deserves. Holland is a native Texan, and it shows in her songwriting. Her images are rich, though stark and Gothic; they sound transposed. While her worldview is mostly modern, its articulation is rooted in a mythical, metonymic America that ceased to exist long before Greil Marcus ever thought about writing Invisible Republic. Catalpa is a place of scribbles and ciphers. Holland's songs are etched out of encounters and experiences that are mercurial, fleeting. As evidenced by "Alley Flowers," a love song, the present and the past intermingle, where street corners and figures like Jesus and Zora Neale Hurston are evoked as relational archetypes, effortlessly. An acoustic guitar played repetitively is colored by bells in the same way Mickey Newbury used rain, as a device to remember and to intimately tell the object that this story is whole, complete, and utterly true in this moment. A pulsing tom tom hangs the tune in the hallmark of memory, haunted, hunted, rooted in the moment, though that moment may have come and gone decades ago. On "I Wanna Die," the spirit of the Carter Family is invoked with a beautifully sung two-part harmony, and a muted banjo played by Enzo Garcia. MORE AMERICANA BY WAY OF THE NETHERLANDSRECOVERY RECORDINGS RELEASES PROUD HEART Recovery Recordings announces the release of PROUD HEART by Texas expatriate singer/songwriter, David Rodriguez. PROUD HEART is Rodriguez' first CD released in the United States in over ten years. Produced by noted Dutch bandleader and songwriter, Ad van Meurs, aka The Watchman, PROUD HEART, was recorded in the Netherlands in the southern town of Eindhoven and mastered in the United States in Houston, Texas. The CD contains 14 tracks; 12 new ones penned by Rodriguez, one by Van Meurs, and one by Italy's poet laureate, Luigi Grechi. Known as a songwriter's songwriter, Rodriguez' body of work remains highly praised by both songwriters and industry insiders. "He's the best still-living singer/songwriter today," testifies producer Van Meurs. During his musical career, Rodriguez has collaborated and shared the stage with Nanci Griffith, Dar Williams, Ani Di Franco, Eric Taylor, Michelle Shocked, The Very Girls, Lyle Lovett, his younger brother, Philip Rodriguez, and his daughter, Carrie Rodriguez. However, it was Lovett who paid Rodriguez the highest compliment one songwriter can pay another by recording the Rodriguez composition, "Ballad of the Snow Leopard and the Tanqueray Cowboy," for the 1998 Lyle Lovett double CD, STEP INSIDE THIS HOUSE.
