Ruby Braff has long been among the most consistent of jazz performers; every note he hits is purposeful. Although playing in an older idiom, the veteran cornetist's enthusiasm and passion makes such songs as "Liza," "Jeepers Creepers" and "Basin Street Blues" sound quite alive and fresh on this live CD from London. Braff is joined by guitarist Howard Alden and bassist Frank Tate. Highlights of the top-notch mainstream performance include "Shoe Shine Boy," Mary Lou Williams' haunting "Lonely Moments," "Linger Awhile," and a three-song medley from the film High Society. ~ Scott Yanow
Although Ruby Braff didn't begin recording until the early 1950s, he began playing the trumpet in 1935 and was a familiar of giants like Willie "The Lion" Smith, Jack Teagarden, Pee Wee Russell and the trombonist George Brunis. On this album originally r

As Time Goes By... CD music
$8.49 This is a Hyper CD, which contains regular audio tracks and also provides a link to the artist's website with the help of a web browser.
Instead of a straightforward take on an assortment of seasonal classics, Harry Connick, Jr. decided to make HARRY FOR THE HOLIDAYS, his second Christmas album in a decade, more of a swinging affair, thanks to his use of unorthodox arrangements. Sure, there's enough lush orchestrations on songs like "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and more secular fare like "Nature Boy" to make Nelson Riddle blush, but Connick does spice things up.
"Frosty the Snowman" turns into a brassy rhumba and the "Christmas Waltz" benefits from the kind of West Coast, cool ...

As Time Goes By... music CDs
$10.49 Despite the omission of Charles "Cow Cow" Davenport and Meade "Lux" Lewis, this 22-track celebration of The Boogie Woogie does present an accurate and convincing overview of the eight-beats-to-the-bar craze that took hold of popular dance music before, during and after the Second World War (1937-1947). Like most developments in jazz and much of popular music in the United States of America, the Boogie Woogie trend was deeply rooted in working class Afro-American culture; the style itself is known to have been developed by pianists providing entertainment for black workers who lived and labored in the grueling environment of Southern turpentine camps. Lewis is invoked by Bob Crosby's Bobcats and pianist Bob Zurke covers Davenport's "Cow Cow Blues." Benny Goodman, Woody Herman and Gene Krupa are each heard clambering onto the bandwagon. "Roll 'Em" was composed by the first lady of Kansas City Swing, Mary Lou Williams. ...

As Time Goes By... songs
$13.45 For Headphone Musics, Z'ev plowed through countless old tapes and more recent recordings to assemble a work that deeply immerses the listener in a timeless, all-encompassing Z'ev sound experience. The liner notes are limited to three notices to listeners, broadcast DJs, and reviewers. The one addressed to the latter group is the most direct: "If you can't be bothered to listen to this music using headphones, please don't bother to write about it." These six pieces, all in the seven- to nine-minute range, ...

As Time Goes By... album
$10.65 Although he previously spent time in Cleveland rock outfits such as 4 Coyotes and Gem, Tim Tobias is probably best known for his time playing bass in the alcohol-fueled touring machine Guided by Voices. (In 2005 he was unceremoniously deleted from GbV history by James Greer's authorized GbV biography, A Brief History: Twenty-One Years of Hunting Accidents in the Forests of Rock and Roll.) Having parted ways with Guided by Voices shortly before the band retired, Tobias re-emerged as a singer and guitarist for Bloom. The group shifted lineups and was renamed Clouds Forming Crowns. CFC's eponymous debut effort is comprised of material collected over the course of a few years. As a result, it sometimes lacks the cohesiveness of a ...
