(4 Customer Reviews)
Animosity: Frank Costa, Nick Lazaro, Leo Miller, Navene Kopperwis, Sean Kopperweis. Recording information: Castle Ultimate Studios, Oakland, CA (??/2002-02/2003). Animosity's first full-length is surprisingly mature, considering that some members were only 15 when recording the album. The group hadn't yet grown into the technical death metal behemoth it would become, but its identity was already evident. Shut It Down mixes atonal death metal with hardcore punk breakdowns and a strong thrash influence, the latter perhaps a product of the band's Bay Area origins. The production is crisp and clear, but a bit light. Thus, the speedier passages are more effective than the breakdowns, which tend to drag. Songwriting isn't a big priority, but riffs are, as the guitarists peel off pick squeals and Suffocation-esque machine gun breaks with ease. The drumming is speedy and occasionally colorful. Leo Miller's death growl hadn't fully developed at this point, so here he sticks mostly to mid-range screams. His idealistic, socially aware lyrics avoid death metal's usual blasphemous tropes: "Our nation constantly instilling the fear/To prolong this war another ten years/But we won't give in to your fight/We'll fight for what is right." This is a solid opening salvo from hardcore punks disguised as metallers. ~ Cosmo Lee Animosity Shut It Down Songs | 1. | Intro |

Jesus christ This is one of the most brutal albums out there. Frank Costa was fourteen when they wrote this album! Shut It Down is technical enough to be pleasing to a metal head but has the breakdowns to destroy kids. Submitted by A.j. (Charlotte, NC) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Animosity Empires CD (2005)
Shut It Down
$8.09 Animosity's second full-length is a big step up from debut Shut It Down. The band's signatures are not only intact, but also more fully developed. Death metal, thrash, and hardcore punk (though in lesser proportion now) mix seamlessly in this ball of aggression. The guitars mesh more cohesively with the rhythm section, and technical chops are on full display. The most significant addition is Southern swing ŕ la Pantera -- see "Commoditism" and "Holy Shackles." The result is more melody, as guitars stretch out, if briefly, with wah-wah fueled leads. The bluesy grooves also carry more space, though they're offset by relentless death metal passages. Leo Miller compounds the urgency with frantic vocal patterns that defy traditional verse-chorus structures. He's still full of defiant idealism: "Live my life, the way that I am supposed to, as a ...
| | As Blood Runs Black Allegiance CD (2006)
Shut It Down
$11.89 As Blood Runs Black: Ernie Flores (guitar); Nick Stewart (bass guitar); Lech(e) (drums); Chris Blair. Personnel: Chris Blair (vocals). Recording information: Castle Ultimate Studios, Oakland, CA. Despite their youth, the members of As Blood Runs Black spent several years digesting various influences and honing their chops before recording their 2006 debut, Allegiance -- a situation which largely explains the contradiction between its advanced musicianship but, at times, both immature and convoluted songwriting. The album's enticing and foreboding intro suggests black metal, yet restlessly assembled ensuing tracks like "In Dying Days," "The Brighter Side of Suffering" and "My Fears Have Become Phobias" quickly alert the listener to expect the unexpected, as the musicians fling themselves around a mosh pit propelled by several different metallic subgenres. The latter track, for instance, is an absolute smorgasbord: following a flurry of death metal riffs with intermittent displays of Cookie Monster grunts and hardcore shout-outs, then launching into a melodious trad metal guitar solo before descending into a blastbeat driven grindcore finale, complete with unintelligible burped vocals. At least ...
| | Animosity Animal CD (2007)
Shut It Down
$9.69 Animosity's 2007 release, Animal, is certainly an aptly titled one, as it proves to be one heck of a ferocious beast from the get-go. Uncertain if they want to be a death metal or hardcore metal band, the group has no problem aligning themselves equally with both genres, resulting in a sonic stew loaded with metronome-perfect drumming, rapid-fire riffs, and vocals that alternate between growls (ŕ la death metal) and screamed (ŕ la hardcore). And the complexity of this metallic noise may even ...

| | Bury Your Dead CD (2008)
Shut It Down
$10.09 Recording information: Audiohammer Studios (11/2007-12/2007). For their first album with new permanent vocalist Myke Terry, Bury Your Dead have gone back to bludgeoning basics, beginning with, but not limited to, the album's title. Opening track "Sympathy Orchestra" is pummeling sheet metal that amply displays Terry's harsh, bellowed vocals, and "Womb Disease" gouges away on barbed, springy bass while the guitars scrape and grind. Their name has never been more appropriate, as the precise, rhythmic riffs sound like they could be digging in hard, frozen earth. BURY YOUR DEAD is a fresh start for the band, and there's obviously little rust on their brutally efficient machine. Bury Your Dead has gone through several lineup changes, so it's no surprise that the band's sound continues to change from album to album. On Bury Your Dead, the group is still harsh, loud, and aggressive, but this time around they seem more inclined to experiment with melody and a sound that's expansive as opposed to the more concussive Beauty and the ...

Prog metal supergroup O.S.I. return with their second album, which finds the duo of singer and keyboardist Kevin Moore and guitarist Jim Matheos moving away from the fairly standard-issue epic metal of 2003's Office of Strategic Influence into something that sounds more like Evanescence's gothy metal-pop crossed with late-era ...

Shut It Down
$20.01 Bride in Legend is the second solo album of Cold Fairyland’s singer and founding member, LinDi. You will be treated to vocal acrobatics in Mountain Song of the Highlands, and an enchanted consultation with the oracle in Riddle in Bronze Mirrors. From the simple, ...
