Black & White; Closed Captioned; Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Soundtrack French; Academy Awards; English Subtitles; Director's Comments; Sensor Matic A con man and his precocious daughter (Ryan and Tatum O'Neal) grift their way across the heartland of depression-era America in this nostalgic look at the 1930s Midwest. The two try desperately to scrounge up enough money to live on, and are willing to employ any means necessary, and their father/daughter relationship becomes a business partnership as the pair find they truly need each other for survival. Madeline Kahn also stars in this film from Peter Bogdanovich. The romantic films of the 1930s and '40s influenced director Peter Bogdanovich (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, MASK) in PAPER MOON, a masterpiece influenced by the filmmaking of those periods --a classic comedy drama that resembles the films of John Ford or Sam Wood.
Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal) is a happy-go-lucky con man traveling throughout the Midwest during the Great Depression, conning widows into buying Bibles. Stopping in a small town for a friend's funeral, he is persuaded to deliver the deceased's precocious 10-year-old daughter, Addie Loggins (Tatum O'Neal, Ryan's real-life daughter), to her aunt's home. The resemblance between Moses and Addie--who never knew her father--is uncanny, and the two are soon acting like father and daughter as they travel the back roads of heartland America. Despite his initial misgivings, Moses is delighted to find that Addie is a boon to business, catching on
quickly and adding her own twists to his favorite cons. Madeline Kahn stars as
Trixie Delight, a ladyfriend Moses meets along the way--a situation that brings out
Addie's possessive side. Bogdanovich convincingly recreates the feel and look of the 1930s with his nostalgic look at life on the open road. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay; both Kahn and the 11-year-old O'Neal were nominated for Best Supporting Actress, which O'Neal won. Theatrical Release: May 9, 1973
Filmed in Florida, Kansas, Missouri, and California.
Actress Tatum O'Neal's film debut also won her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. She turned 11 while shooting the film.
Director Peter Bogdanovich shot the film in black-and-white because he felt the actors looked too healthy in color.
The film's music includes old recordings from the collection of Warner Bros. editor Rudi Fehr. Paper Moon Reviews: "...The O'Neals' beguiling father-daughter act...plays out against stunning dust-bowl tableaux..." -- Rating: B+

Paper Moon Movie Review The Academy Picked A Winner This version has a very interesting introduction by director Peter Bogdonovich. It's fun to see the out takes just before the film, and I highly recommend this version in its letter box format. 9 year old Tatum O'Neal makes her acting debut, and although her father, Ryan, is slated as the "star" of this movie, there's no doubt who shines greatest in this film. Although, it's certainly a tough race. And, ultimately, Tatum did get an Oscar for her performance. Madeline Kahn is also featured in this film, and, as always, she is hillarious. A very sweet period piece of 30's nostalgia. Comedy/Drama. I highly recommend it! Submitted by a reviewer (Lexington, SC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

Timeless Filmmaking From the first moments of the opening titles, "Paper Moon" announces that it is unabashedly set in it's on period....even when I first saw it at theaters in the 70s it looked and felt like and old movie...not like a new Hollywood film trying to APPEAR like an old movie.
Never has a film's period feel and look been captured more effectively. It ranks with "Chinatown" and "The Godfather" for it's perfect visual combination of cinematography and set design. Laslow Kovacs virtually painted this bleak looking black and white film with his camera. The film's soundtrack of period songs only adds to the effect....always a song almost floating in the air in the background behind the dialog. Pay particular attention on a second viewing to the depth of field in this film...the small bits of action going on way in the distance in many scenes. Many of Kovac's shots look like still pictures from Andrew Wyeth, without ever really intruding on the film itself or its flow.
Tatum won an Academy Award and certainly deserved to, but Ryan O'Neal was just as impressive....to watch the two of them carry out there ongoing love/hate relationship is one of the most memorable movie experiences you will have. Madeline Kahn is hysterical as usual, and all of the extras (which include Randy Quaid as a wild hillbilly) are sublime. John Hillerman was at his peak at this time....one of the best bad guys around. People who know him from his nice guy "Magnum" TV role will be surprised by his sinister and slithery character, a character he also portrays well in "Chinatown," but this is the backwoods version of that role.
The various adventures Ryan and Tatum find themselves involved in are alternatingly funny, sad, and suspenseful, and as they accumulate, the two become more enmeshed, as are we, the audience. Tatum's long road home is a journey you will likely take more than once....it's the kind of film with a script so good that you find yourself remembering and repeating punchlines from it for a long time after you've seen it.
It's nearly a flawless film. In fact, I can't think of a weakness in it....it's pace is good, it's script is terrific, the acting is wonderful (right down to the lowliest of extras) the look is magnificent. And the feelings and emotions of the film are why we go to movies.
Don't miss this. Submitted by a reviewer (Boca Raton, Florida) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
Great Movue-Awesome soundtrack I can't add any superlatives that haven't already been said. Pathos, comedy, deeper meaning, etc.
However, the soundtrack is, in my opinion, superiior to "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou" both in selection, socially appropriate inclusion and authenticity. I wish there were a CD available! Submitted by Rockystock (Columbia Tn,USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.
