Virgin Black should get some kind of prize simply for having the audacity to name their sophomore album Elegant. . .and Dying. But let's not be too hard on this Australian quintet over such matters because, after all, this extravagant title actually suits their outrageously over-indulgent, but equally awe-inspiring dark metal symphonies perfectly. Much of the credit for this feat must go to singer, chief songwriter, and head vampire Rowan London, who put his money where his mouth was (literally!) by taking vocal lessons with a professional opera singer prior to this recording. He could still use a little work, but his pipes already show a marked improvement over 2001's (at times cringe-inducing) Sombre Romantic, as he steps to the fore on opener "Adorned in Ashes." As for the more reliable musical portion of Elegant. . .and Dying, brazenly ambitious epics such as the nine-minute "Cult of Crucifixion," and the 20-minute behemoth "The Everlasting," might look overwhelming on paper, but such is the nature of the album's cohesive start-to-finish ambience that their bloated lengths hardly betray themselves. Still, there's nothing like a little restraint to entrust a great song with even more succinct power, and the two-part "And the Kiss of God's Mouth" is especially beautiful and evocative, if also somewhat reminiscent of previously heard masterpieces by label mates Agalloch. Still, it's difficult to resist this song's sheer stylistic breadth, or that of ensuing highlights such as "Renaissance" and "Beloved," whose melancholy charms will doubtlessly seduce most any open-minded fans of both heavy metal and gothic rock. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
The debut release by this Australian band created waves of attention due to their unique sound of operatic, symphonic metal. The 2003 album Elegant...And Dying is even more unconventional and one of the most artistic releases to come out this year for the genre. The End Records.

$10.69 While mainstream rap-metal acts often found success by merely amplifying rap's most obvious elements, New Jersey's E-Town Concrete seemed truly intent on integrating vocalist Anthony Martini's gruff flow into its sludgy, hardcore rhythms. Even if Time2Shine's idea bank eventually ran dry, it was a bold attempt in a genre normally so content to follow the leader. E-Town has returned with the appropriately titled Second Coming, which expands the group's instrumental and stylistic palette while solidifying its foundation with more focused performances and, of course, large helpings of heaviness. The otherwise seething "Soldier" ends with an extended instrumental section that can only be described as light jazz, while "Dirty Jer-Z"'s verses employ elements of funk underneath some of Martini's most succinct raps yet. Naturally, the song explodes into a metal chorus, featuring the unassuming vocal hook "I'm the king/Make room for me." While Martini's MC skills have improved, E-Town falls into a different kind of rut with this effort. Where its debut just ran out of creative steam, Second Coming seems to plateau after establishing its two well-defined sides. There's the grating hardcore influence in the chorus, complete with Martini's vicious, no-less-diminished yawp. But, inevitably, each song tumbles into amped up hip-hop for its verses. E-Town performs the songs with greater skill and patience, but they're much closer to the rap-metal norm, without much of that street-level feel that defined the eager Time2Shine. That ...
