Throwdown's followers insist that the Southern California residents are a cut above most of the bands in the metalcore field, which was extremely crowded in the '90s and early 2000s. And when Haymaker is playing, one is inclined to agree with that assertion. For all its bombast and sledgehammer brutality, Haymaker is simply smarter and better constructed than most of 2003's metalcore CDs -- which is saying a lot when you consider just how much of a metalcore glut there was that year. Haymaker isn't quite as heavy and dense as some metalcore outings; Throwdown give listeners more room to breathe and don't go out of their way to be exhausting. But while that room-to-breathe factor is a plus, it isn't the main thing that makes Haymaker superior to competing metalcore discs -- the things that make this album above average are the hooks, the vocals, and the lyrics. Lead singer Dave Peters favors the sort of tortured, screaming vocal style that metalcore is known for, but his screaming doesn't make the lyrics difficult or impossible to understand (which is a common problem among metalcore, grindcore, death metal, and black metal bands). You can easily understand the lyrics that are coming out of his mouth, and those lyrics -- for all their angst, anger, rebellion, and catharsis -- are relatively thoughtful. Peters often addresses the importance of things like friendship and self-respect, thus reflecting Throwdown's straight-edge outlook. Ultimately, Haymaker's lyrics are more positive than negative, but without getting into the sort of preachy political correctness that has made some straight-edge bands off-putting and even annoying. Heaven knows, there were plenty of metalcore releases to choose from in 2003; Haymaker is certainly among the more memorable ones. ~ Alex HendersonCMJ (07/07/03, p.24) - "...Moshcore so brutish that it's barely street-legal. HAYMAKER administers chugga-chugga breakdowns that would make Hatebreed smile, while pound-your-chest sing-a-longs espouse straightedge dogma..." TD--UNITE THE MASSES!!! Another awesome Throwdown CD. This album has a very strong Straight Edge message. The music takes on a slightly slower pace than the previous release, but itfs still great. Throwdown is definitely one of the greatest Straight Edge bands ever, always staying true to their roots. Submitted by pepsithedog2001 (Phoenix, AZ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Throwdown Vendetta CD (2005)
Haymaker
$11.49 Throwdown: Ben, Dave, Matt, Dom. Although 2003's Haymaker was a tough act to follow, Throwdown don't lose any creative ground on their inspired follow-up, Vendetta. Those who use bloated phrases like "the future of metal" to describe Throwdown are going overboard with the hype; however, it is no exaggeration to say that the southern California outfit is one of the more impressive bands in the metalcore field -- and considering how many metalcore bands were formed in the late '90s and early to mid-2000s, that is saying a lot. All of the things that made Haymaker a winner are equally prevalent on Vendetta; from the intelligent lyrics to the infectious hooks to the conviction that Dave Peters brings to his blistering lead vocals, Vendetta is easily one of 2005's strongest metalcore discs. While the lyrics are full of angst and anger, Vendetta isn't just an exercise in angst for the sake of angst; Throwdown speak of the importance of dignity, self-respect, and friendship in a world where those things can be hard to come by. The Orange County residents are definitely coming from a straight-edge perspective, but they manage to avoid sounding preachy. Some straight-edge bands can be overbearingly preachy and remind listeners that a smug, self-righteous politically correct vegan can be every bit as annoying as a Religious Right gasbag like Sean Hannity. But ...

Granted, that success was largely limited to Europe and Japan, but it was enough to sustain the group. And, weirdly enough, through sheer existence -- continual touring and recording -- Helloween accomplished something very rare indeed for metal bands in their second decade: they actually began to improve. They never quite managed to hit the peaks of ...
