Canadian chanteuse Tamia got a taste for the spotlight in her early teens, singing for Quincy Jones on his 1995 album Q'S JOOK JOINT, so it's no surprise that her third album, MORE, finds the vocalist refined and at top form nearly a decade later. Tamia's greatest strength is her understatement; she knows how to convey power during a song without resorting to overstated vocal acrobatics. Even when she bounds over three or more octaves in a single phrase, as on the alluring and sensual title track, she does so with a subtle agility.
Tamia also shows an equal skill with pop ballads and dance numbers. MORE opens with the bouncy, imperious "On My Way," which glides into the aforementioned title track before drifting into a collection of the sweetest of ballads, including the mournful, gentle guitar-pop of "Officially Missing You" and the insistent "Still." Fabolous drapes a gritty rap over the soft touch of "I'm Yours," while Gerald Levert joins her to dip "(They Long to Be) Close to You" in molasses and somehow discover a new angle on the well-covered tune. As these songs prove, Tamia is a powerful soul singer at the top of her game on MORE.

$9.05 It may be a natural sense of restraint (otherwise known as taste) or just a pipes issue that keeps R&B siren Tamia from engaging in cliche melisma histrionics on her self-titled debut. Similarly, it may be a keen ear for perfect pop/R&B hooks or just a collective unconsciousness thing that brings her to base "Falling For You" around a sample of the Emotions' '70s classic "Best Of My Love." Regardless of the motivations behind her choices, TAMIA presents a new voice in a flattering light. It's an album full of sinuous, sexy tunes that will make fans of contemporary R&B prick up their ears.

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
More CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition ...
| | Tesla Into The Now CD (2004)
More music CDs
$8.49 Unfairly labeled a hair-metal band, Tesla was always closer to the spirit of vintage 1970s hard rock. When the group released 1994's BUST A NUT, grunge rock was in full swing, and the Sacramento quintet subsequently took their curtain call, keeping busy with low-profile side projects. Testing the waters in 2000, Tesla launched a successful reunion tour, proving the band's enduring appeal. INTO THE NOW stands as their first full-length studio effort ...

| | Mario Winans Hurt No More CD (2004)
More album
$12.95 For a member of the revered Winans clan, practically the first family of gospel, to turn to Bad Boy Records would almost seem scandalous, but so it is with Mario Winans, the sultry-toned crooner/songwriter. After releasing an overlooked debut in 1997, he aligned with Sean Combs's empire to become a well-regarded producer. Almost seven years later, he emerged with the smooth, multicolored HURT NO MORE, a record crafted in the Bad Boy style, but absolutely immersed in soul of the past (particularly the Philly variety).
While Winans's stories of love, loss, desire, and deceit are entirely secular, he sings with unwavering heartfelt soul worthy of an heir to gospel royalty. It's as if he's pouring his entire being into many of the songs on HURT NO MORE, which contains ...

| | Bruce Robison Country Sunshine CD (2001)
More album
$16.45 Described as "one of the best of a new breed of singer-songwriters in Texas and beyond" by Billboard magazine, Bruce has built a career as a recording artist whose songs are sought out by country stars, Americana artists and other singer-songwriters alike. His song "Travelin' Soldier" became a No. 1 hit for the Dixie Chicks. His "Angry All The Time" topped the charts as a duet by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. Recently his song "Desperately" hit for George Strait. Others that have recorded his songs include; Lee Ann Womack, Gary Allan, and Allison Moorer. His wife, singer Kelly Willis, and his brother Charlie also draw on his catalog of material."I really like the niche I'm in right now," says the six-foot, seven-inch Robison. "I'm getting to do so many of the things I love to do."Robison recorded his recent album, "Country Sunshine," at his home studio and released it on his own Boar's Nest Records. Its intimate, wide-ranging feel exercised the freedom of making an album on one's own, yet it also stayed accessible to both mainstream and alt-country music fans. The album drew widespread acclaim - Entertainment Weekly gave it an "A," while the Austin Chronicle called it Robison's "best album."Of course, he's yet to cut a bad one. His self-titled debut was released in 1996 as an independent album. His second album, "Wrapped," originally also came out on a small label, but was picked up by Sony's Lucky Dog Records. Robison stayed with Lucky Dog for two more albums, "Long Way Home From Here," and a live album recorded with his brother Charlie Robison and fellow Texan Jack Ingram. He then asked to leave Sony Music, deciding to form his own record company back home in Austin. "The music business is being re-invented from the ground up right now, and I thought it was a good time to keep ownership of my recordings," he says. "I can make as much money recording my own records as I can at a major label. And holding onto to your creative work seems like a an idea that will work in my favor in the long run."By starting Premium Records, a small label and Premium Recording Services, a top-of-the-line recording studio, Robison has evolved into a renaissance man who, good Texan that he is, loves his independence. "My songs are a little different than what usually comes out of Nashville," he says. "I love Nashville because it's the last bastion of the songwriter, the last Tin Pan Alley. I love the musicians there and the way the town works. But it works best for me to stay in Texas. That has become my calling card." Robison pulls it off because of the reputation he's established. His albums present personal versions of his distinctive songs, highlighting the wry emotion of his dry expressive Texas tenor, his knack for impactful stories and his reflective take on relationships and the world."Robison has a style that tends to be soulfully understated," wrote Nick Cristiano of the Philadelphia Inquirer. "It's one that well suits the intimate penetrating nature of his songs."Indeed, nearly all of his musical heroes owned an independent streak. Two of them, Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings, saw their careers take off after they took more control of their music. Similarly, Jerry Jeff Walker, another hero, has long owned his own record company. And so the future holds more recording for Bruce ...
| | Best Of Altan: The Songs CD (2003)
More CD music
$12.49 Altan has reached a point in its career where the band could conceivably exist off of the endless repackaging of its collected works. After nine solid albums of Celtic wizardry, they show no signs of slowing down, and seem the likely candidate to usurp the throne currently occupied by the Chieftains. The Best of Altan: The Songs is an anthology of their non-instrumental work from their four records on the Virgin label. Each track ...
| | Dj Jazzy Jeff In The House CDs (2004) England; Box Set
More music CDs
$16.95 The percentage of sophisticated house music (or "deep" house) that is dire and samey is alarmingly high -- higher than most other forms of music. Thankfully, DJ Jazzy Jeff shows throughout the majority of this expansive two-disc mix that he's adept at picking some of the best of the lot. House heads who stay on top of new releases and refer to anything older than a few months as "old" or "played-out" might not be impressed, but time will show that this set is a vibrant reflection of house in the early 2000s. If you find no joy in Ron Trent's mix of Jody Watley's "Saturday," Osunlade's mix of Erro's "Rock Wit U Dub," the Chez mix of Jazztronik's "Samuri," or Trackheadz's "Our Music," you might as well give up on deep house and never go near the stuff again. Jeff also mixes in several long-established underground dance classics, such as Herman Kelly & Life's "Dance to the Drummer's Beat," Nina Simone's "See Line Woman," Cymande's "Bra," and Kool & the Gang's "Open Sesame," and they mingle with the modern material better than expected. With any luck, the set will convert some house-phobic hip-hop fanatics; Jeff is one of the few active hip-hoppers who spins house (modern or otherwise), and he does it very, very well. A bonus disc features six of the tracks from the mix in full, unmixed form. ~ Andy Kellman
The second double-LP set that selects some of the tracks used by DJ Jazzy Jeff in his contribution to Defected's In the House series, this package focuses on funk, where the other focused on house. Again, most of these tracks are widely available, but it'll be convenient for DJs and those who don't have ...
