"The District Sleeps Alone" is one of the moodiest highlights of the Postal Service's moody 2003 album Give Up. The track features deeply sad vocals by Ben Gibbard and some inspired musical backing full of tripping strings, sweeping female harmony vocals, and skittery beats provided by Jimmy Tamborello. The two remixes of the track on the single don't improve upon the original much but are interesting: DJ Downfall's "Persistent Beat" mix adds a persistent beat, some fluttery sequencers, and a jolt of energy while John Tejada's mix adds a housey beat and some slide guitar. Both mixes keep the vocals intact. The fourth song is an imaginative and subdued take on the Flaming Lips' "Suddenly Everything Has Changed." ~ Tim Sendra

The Postal Service is Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley). This is their second single from their critically acclaimed 2003 debut, Give Up on Sub Pop. The title track is backed with three non-LP tracks, 'The District Sleeps Alone Tonight' (DJ Downfall Persistent Beat Mix), 'Such Great Heights' (John Tejada Remix) & 'Suddenly Everything Has Changed' (Flaming Lips cover).

Audio Mixer: The Postal Service.

Audio Remixers: DJ Downfall; John Tejada.

4 stars Good Single
This song made me fall in love with the Postal Service, but the remixes are sub-par. The main reason I bought this was for "Everything Has Changed", which is not on Give Up. The first and last tracks make this a pretty good CD.

5 stars Finally Gibbard Speaks!!!!
WOW! what an album....I've been a HUGE Death Cab fan for a long long time now and have always felt a little dissapointed that Ben's voice hasn't been promoted enough through the music. The Postal Service changes everything....some awesome harmonies and double tracking backed by some great production and a perfect mix makes this album a MUST HAVE for any death cab fan. Yeah it's different with the electronic background but wow they do it soooo sooo well. If this is the way Ben's going now then one can only assume that the upcoming death cab album will be the best yet. Well done and a huge thumbs up for The Postal Service.....GO BUY IT!!!!!

Postal Service Such Great Heights   (2003) Single

District Sleeps Alone Tonight album
CD Single $6.89  3.5 stars Audio Samples
Such Great Heights is a single by Sub Pop electro-poppers Postal Service with a great idea behind it. Listeners get the best song from the full-length record, "Such Great Heights"; a strong non-album track, "There's Never Enough Time"; and two bands playing covers of Postal Service songs. The Shins sparkle on their version of "We Will Become Silhouettes" and Iron and Wine plays a positively stunning rendition of "Such Great Heights." Both bands strip away Postal Service's new wave electronics and play the songs straight, the Shins with their typical ramshackle verve and Iron and Wine with Sam Beam's haunting vocals and British folk-style guitars. A worthy purchase for fans of the three bands and for all indie kids. ~ Tim Sendra This collaboration between Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel, Figurine) combines Ben's sweet-as-pie vocals and Jimmy's soaring electro-pop soundscapes, making for sublime listening. This specially priced single is a teaser ...

A side project from Death Cab For Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello, who formerly played with synth-poppers Figurine but now records as Dntel, the Postal Service creates bedroom electronica with surprising emotional pull on GIVE UP. Ten tracks lyrically convey both a youthful ennui and the nostalgic ache of longing. Tamborello creates a tense sonic space that allows Gibbard's spare yet careful guitar to occasionally chime in and cut the tension. While Tamborello's sculpted electronics hearken back to the minimalism of early Depeche Mode, Gibbard's expressively fey vocals and emotional sentiments lend a warm, comforting contrast to the machine-age ...

Although rumors of the Cure's demise circulated after 2000's BLOODFLOWERS, and even frontman Robert Smith claimed the group was finished on numerous occasions, the revered post-punk band remained united, and released this self-titled album in 2004. Expertly timed to follow the excellent JOIN THE DOTS rarities box set and ride a wave of adoration from hip, younger ...

Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD  (2005)

District Sleeps Alone Tonight album
CD $10.79  4.5 stars Audio Samples Definitive Album
On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation. Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, Bloc Party also recalls the ecstatic soundwashes of early-1990s cult pioneers like Ride ("Plans") and Slowdive ("Compliments"). Lyrically, Okerere tilts toward an endearing adolescent pessimism that, even when the music is less than mopey, gives him away as a goth at heart ("and the ravens are leaving the tower/make your peace"). However, at the end of "Price of Gas," when he proclaims "I can tell ...
