| | Dazz Band 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection CD (2001)
Mix CD music
$6.75 Originally released on Motown Records. Includes liner notes by A. Scott Galloway.
An 11-song snapshot of the Dazz Band's Motown stint that includes the not-often-featured "To the Roof," whose origins date back to "Take It to the Woof" by Cleveland, OH-based funk band Morning Maniac led by ex-Dazz Band member Kenny Pettus who's the lead voice on the Earth, Wind and Fire-ish "I Might As Well Forget About Loving You." But other than that, there are no surprises, just straight-ahead digitally remastered Dazz Band blasts that blow you away in CD format ("Let It Whip"'s bassline is hypnotizing). For lovers, "Invitation to Love" and "Knock, Knock" are bonafide heart stirrers and the only two slow jams in the bunch. Not as complete as the 1994 Funkology: The Definitive Dazz Band but dazzling enough. ~ Andrew Hamilton
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Compilation producer: Harry Weinger.
Personnel: Michael Boddicker, Steve Cox (programming).
Liner Note Author: A. Scott Galloway.
The Dazz Band includes: Sennie "Skip" Martin (vocals, trumpet); Keith Harrison (vocals, keyboards); Kenny Pettus (vocals, percussion); Eric Fearman (guitar); Bobby ...
| | Monchy & Alexandra Confesiones CD (2002)
Mix music CDs
$10.29 CONFESIONES was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Tropical Album.
The traditional folk music of the Dominican Republic known as bachata started becoming a dominant style in the tropical music field after the release of Juan Luis Guerra's Bachata Rosa in 1990. The duo Monchy & Alexandra, consisting of Ramón Rijo and Alexandra Cabrera de la Cruz, emerged in the late '90s as the music grew in popularity both in the Caribbean and in Latin communities of the U.S. After issuing the chart-topping "Hoja en Blanco" in 2001, the Dominican ensemble returned in March 2002 with Confesiones, featuring the hit singles "Dos Locos" and "Te Quiero Igual Que Ayer," delivered in bachata, ...
| | La Oreja De Van Gogh Lo Que Te Conte Mientras Te Hacias La Dormida CD (2003)
Mix songs
$10.09 LO QUE TE CONTE MIENTRAS TE HACIAS LA DORMIDA was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album.
Although at first listen La Oreja de Van Gogh's third release might sound like a slick rehashing of the same pop formula that had brought the group consistent commercial success, Lo Que Te Conté Mientras Te Hacías la Dormida (What I Told You While You Pretended to Be Asleep) merits closer attention. Beyond some similarities to their earlier work -- nostalgic lyrics, ridiculously catchy choruses, and lead singer Amaia Montero's seemingly fragile delivery -- this album displays far greater emotional and musical range than do their earlier efforts. Montero and keyboard player Xabi San Martín continue to write most of the music, and guitar player Pablo Benegas most of the lyrics, but there are some notable exceptions, like album opener and first single "Puedes Contar Conmigo" (You Can Count on Me), written entirely by Montero. Here she abandons any former posturing as a helpless little girl and sings not about a fairy tale, but about love that's flawed and recognizable; when the final chorus slows, the spare outline of Montero's voice shapes a real and exquisite moment of heartbreak. In "Tú y Yo," a collaboration among all three musicians, the lyrics are simpler than elsewhere, but with their wry and modern self-awareness, they are also cleverer. San Martín takes full credit for "Geografía," a song without parallels in their repertoire, harnessing the rollicking gait of Andean pipe tunes and inventing ingenious borders for a nation made up of just two lovers. And throughout the album, there are successful musical experiments, like a bossa nova groove at the beginning of "Perdóname," a harder edged vocal line paired with a driving beat on "La Paz de Tus Ojos," or the nonsense syllables of the ...
| | Monchy & Alexandra Hasta El Fin CD (2004)
Mix album
$11.15 Monchy & Alexandra combine salsa & merengue music with American pop on HASTA EL FIN. Largely consisting of passionate love songs, this 2004 release features stunning vocal performances, tight musicianship, and resplendent production. As with many Latin albums, the percussion is the backbone of the ensemble and the driving force behind the music. For example, on "Esperando Estar Juntos" and "No Te Prometo Que Si (Tratare de Olvidar)," the congas, bongos, and guiro lay down a taut groove, while Monchy & Alexandra's legato voices soliloquize overtop. On HASTA EL FIN, Monchy & Alexandra do not offer up any of the wilder, more celebratory, forms of merengue and salsa (a la Tito Puente); instead, ...
| | Aventura God's Project CD (2005)
Mix CD music
$13.85 Since its formation in the Bronx, New York in 1994, Dominican boy band Aventura has been steadily expanding its sound toward a style that incorporates hip-hop, R&B, rock, merengue, and reggaeton, while still retaining strong traces of traditional bachata. GOD'S PROJECT is the culmination of Aventura's stylistic expansion, and is the group's most mature, diverse, and accomplished album.
The sounds of bachata--the quartet's foundation--are still prominent, especially on "Ciego de Amor," which features a cameo by Antony Santos, one of the Dominican Republic's leading bachata artists (not to be confused with Aventura's own Anthony "Romeo" Santos). The group also ventures deep into reggaeton territory on the likes of "Ella y Yo" (which stars reggaeton kingpin Don Omar). Various international flavors work their way into the mix, particularly the samples of Asian music that crop up here and there, and the strains of traditional flamenco on "Un Beso." All of this is wrapped skillfully in a sound and attitude that bursts with contemporary pop savvy.

| | Clientele Fading Summer CD (2000)
Mix CD music
$8.99 "I saw these guys open for Love!" No you didn't, Uncle Bill. Remember 1966? Me neither, and the members of the Clientele were probably negative eight years-old. An introduction to the Clientele for those in the U.S., A Fading Summer teases with two songs nicked from the band's already collectable singles (ahem -- 45s) and a pair of previously unreleased ones. For '60s pop fetishists who hold onto their copies of Forever Changes with dear life but find more recent darlings Belle and Sebastian too twee, this release might be enough to encite eternally rabid fandom. The tone sustained throughout this all-too-brief EP is one best suited for gazing at dust particles in your bedroom. The fuzzy production complements Alisdair McLean's gentle voice, which has all the innocence and comfort of Luna's Dean Wareham and Mojave 3's Neil Halstead. This isn't mere ...
