Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band: Bob Seger (vocals, guitar); Drew Abbott (guitar); Alto Reed (saxophone); Chris Campbell (bass); David Teegarden (drums, percussion). Additional personnel: Pete Carr, Jimmy Johnson (guitar); Barry Beckett, Dr. John (piano); Paul Harris (piano, organ); Randy McCormick (organ); Bill Payne (keyboards); Doug Riley (synthesizer); David Hood (bass); Roger Hawkins (drums, percussion); Sam Clayton (percussion); Timothy B. Schmit, Laura Creamer, Linda Dillard, Ginger Blake, Don Henley, Glenn Frey (background vocals). Producers: Bob Seger, Punch, The Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, Bill Szymczyk. Engineers: John Arrias, Steve Melton, Bill Szymczyk. Recorded at Criteria Studios, Miami, Florida; Muscle Shoals Sound Studios, Sheffield, Alabama; and Bayshore Studios, Coconut Grove, Florida. Though there are still some traces of the confessionals that underpinned Beautiful Loser through Stranger in Town, Against the Wind finds Bob Seger turning toward craft. Perhaps he had to, since Against the Wind arrived after three blockbuster albums and never-ending tours. Even so, this record winds up not feeling as immediate or soulful as its predecessors, especially since it begins with a tossed-off rocker called "The Horizontal Bop," possibly his most careless tune since "Noah." It's fun, but once it's done, the record really starts to kick into high gear with "You'll Accomp'ny Me," a ballad the equal of anything on its two predecessors. Throughout Against the Wind, Seger winds up performing better on the ballads than the rockers, which, while good, tend to sound a little formulaic. Still, Seger's formula is good and if "Her Strut" and "Betty Lou's Gettin' out Tonight" would have been second stringers on Stranger in Town, they offer a nice balance here, and the rest of the record alternates between similarly well-constructed rockers and introspective ballads like "Against the Wind" and "Fire Lake." Compared to its predecessors, this does feel a little weak, but compared with its peers, it's a strong, varied heartland rock album that finds Seger at a near peak. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine After several straight-ahead rock releases helped establish Bob Seger as one of America's top rockers in the late '70s, he opened up the next decade on a quieter note, 1980's AGAINST THE WIND. Another big hit, WIND finds Seger at his most reflective, with ballads and country-influenced compositions making up most of the album. The best examples of Seger's new '80s direction can be sampled in the album's best cut, the heartfelt title track. Other highlights included the ballads "Shinin' Brightly" and "No Man's Land," making AGAINST THE WIND another highly recommended Bob Seger release.CMJ (1/5/04, p.6) - Ranked #10 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1980". Against The Wind Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Outstamdomg Collection of Songs I've been hooked on Seger since the 70's. He always manages to find at least one song per album, that not only captures his unique delivery style, but one that goes down his is collection of all time greates. This album in my humble option contains at least five such songs. In addition to its title song (Against The Wind), Seger's Fire Lake, You'll Accompany Me, Her Strut and Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight make this quite possible his best non greatest hits albums of all times. It's a sure classic and one I deep cherish. Submitted by jyeary3 (Spring TEXAS) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
must have For all Bob Seger fans, this cd is definitely a must-have. There's not a single throw-away song in the batch! Although I don't count Bob Seger as my favorite recording artist, this cd definitely is a favored one in my collection. Submitted by edjavgarcia (McAllen, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

No Mans Land The album is incredible, but is it me or how anybody metioned the song (or lyrics) to No Mans Land . Submitted by J.B. Gosnell (Madison County,North Carolina) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Something Special Although Seger's previous album may be more solid and rockin', "Against the Wind" features some of his most exceptional and most grossly underrated songs. My 3 complaints regard three songs, which I think are inconsistent with the rest of the album. While the opening track is a very poetic and upbeat party tune, its production sets too light a tone for the next 9 songs. "Her Strut" sounds shoddy, and "Betty Lou...", though another fun party tune, sounds more like something taken out of the 1950s than out of the 70s or 80s. But there's enough heart-and-soul Seger here to make the album an almost magical delight. Grab it. 4/5 stars Submitted by nychro7 (D.C. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Robbie Williams Sing When You're Winning CD (2000) (Import) United Kingdom
Against The Wind

This is an Enhanced CD which contains regular audio tracks as well as multimedia computer files. Personnel includes: Robbie Williams (vocals); Alana Duncan (spoken vocals); Neil Taylor (electric guitar); Guy Chambers (guitar, keyboards, synthesizer): Phil Palmer (12-string guitar); Steve Sidwell (piccolo trumpet); Dave Catlin-Birch (bass, background vocals); Winston Blissett, Brad Lang, Phil Spalding (bass); Chris Sharrock (drums); Andy Duncan (percussion); Andy Caine, Steve McEwan, Gary Nuttall, Claire Worrall (background vocals), Kylie Minogue. This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files. Performance dynamo and chameleonic entertainment personality Robbie Williams made a rapid transformation -- from English football hooligan to dapper saloon singer -- for his fourth LP, Swing When You're Winning. Still, Williams' tribute to the great American songbook is a surprisingly natural fit with its intended target: '50s trad-pop patriarchs like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. And just like those two loveable rogues, Williams has brawled and boozed in the past, but isn't afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve; in fact, he's one of the few modern pop stars to fully embrace affecting balladry and nuanced singing. Williams and longtime producer Guy Chambers are also extremely careful with their product, so it shouldn't be surprising that Swing When You're Winning has innumerable extra-musical touches to carry it over: the cover features Williams relaxing in the studio in a period suit; his contract with EMI enabled the addition of the treasured Capitol logo at the top of the sleeve, and several tracks were even recorded at the famed Capitol tower in Hollywood. Fortunately, Williams is no less careful with his performances. Since he lacks the authoritative air of master crooners like Sinatra and Bing Crosby (along with the rest of humanity), he instead plays up his closer connections to the world of Broadway. ...
