Let's face it; David Lee Roth was the most exciting and entertaining singer to ever front Van Halen. And although his solo albums have not all been winners, at least he's been known to take chances and try new approaches with rock music (such as the entirely sung-in-Spanish Sonrisa Salvaje, the synth pop-ish Skyscraper, the Nile Rodgers-produced Your Filthy Little Mouth, etc.). For his 2003 release Diamond Dave, Roth uses the same approach he and his then-comrades in Van Halen followed on 1982's Diver Down -- an album consisting primarily of cover songs, with a few originals sprinkled in. As expected, the covers that work the best are the ones that aren't that well known, including the lead-off single "Shoo Bop" (a cover of Steve Miller's "Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma") and a big band reading of a tune Van Halen covered way back when, "Ice Cream Man," while a few of the better-known songs (especially Jimi Hendrix's "If 6 Was 9") don't fare as well. Of course, Diamond Dave is no Fair Warning. But it's a hell of a whole lot more listenable than anything Van Halen has issued in ages (especially when compared to the 1998 atrocity Van Halen III). ~ Greg Prato

David Lee Roth Diamond Dave Songs Diamond Dave Music Review Average Rating: (3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Dave's got the blues, no one else! Diamond Dave is back with some miscelaneous pieces of pretty good songs which he performs in his uncomparable style and voice. It's so great to hear him singing and get thrilled by his swelling vocals. Dave, you're indeed my "Medicine Men". Don't wait, consumers, buy this CD. Great blues album! Dave's still a great singer, and has excellent musicians working with him. The songs are covers, but there's plenty of original creativity in the remaking of them. Redoing a Beatles or Hendrix song can be an embarrasing failure, but Dave and his friends pull it off well. I hope Dave sticks to this bluesy type stuff; it's what he does best.

Eclectic Dave ? This is not a normal DLR release where he rocks the house like he did with his DLR Band cd from 1998 (which is his best solo cd in my opinion). This cd is more like Your Filthy Little Mouth from 1994. It's also similar to his Crazy From the Heat E.P. circa 1985. It's just Dave being Dave while making a light hearted and off beat album which would normally be very cool. If only we had the one and only "Mighty Van Halen" to go to as our main source of Dave rock, this cd would not be such a disappointment to us all. Diamond Dave album
$7.59 After five hit albums spanning 1978 through 1982, Van Halen issued its biggest album yet with 1984 (released the same year as its title). 1984 spawned several monster hits and is often heralded as the ultimate rock album of the decade. Van Halen was experiencing internal friction despite such success. Depending on whose story you choose to believe, either singer ...
| | David Lee Roth Eat 'Em And Smile CD (1986)
Diamond Dave CD music
$9.19 After David Lee Roth's shocking split from Van Halen at the height of the group's popularity, all parties involved resorted to a media-fueled circus of mudslinging. Roth's first post-V.H. project was to be a motion picture (CRAZY FROM THE HEAT) which never got off the ground. But Roth had already assembled a killer solo band, including ex-Frank Zappa guitarist Steve Vai, ...

| | Dream Theater Train Of Thought CD (2003)
Diamond Dave album
$11.05 TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect. This outing continues in the heavier mode that began with 2002's SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, reaching even further into darker, personal lyrical themes.
Guitars are the dominant expressive voice here, ...
