| | Miff Mole Slippin' Around, Vol. 1 CD (1998)
Knightowl Presents Episode 13 CD music
$18.05 One of the top trombonists of the second half of the 1920s, Miff Mole had a highly original style that featured wide-interval jumps and occasional whole-tone scales. Other than two big-band selections from 1937, all of his recordings as a leader prior to 1944 are on Slippin' Around, Vol. 1 and Slippin' Around Again, Vol. 2. Vol. 1 includes 14 numbers by Miff Mole's Molers of 1927-1928, a recording band that was basically Red Nichols' Five Pennies: cornetist Nichols, Mole, pianist Arthur Schutt, guitarist Dick McDonough, and drummer Vic Berton, plus reedist Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Tarto on tuba, drummer Ray Bauduc, Fud Livingston on reeds, bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini, and guitarist Eddie Lang on various tracks. Mole's four numbers backing stage singer Sophie Tucker (who sounds pretty strong in 1927), four cuts with Red & Miff's Stompers, two by the Red Nichols Orchestra, and a pair of test pressings from a Mole session in 1930 (with trumpeter Phil Napoleon) wrap up this intriguing set. Highlights include adventurous versions of "Hurricane," "Delirium," "Davenport Blues," "Imagination," and "Feeling No Pain." ~ Scott Yanow
26 tracks from 1927-30, feat. Red Nichols, Jimmy Dorsey, Pee Wee Russell, Gene Krupa, Fud Livingston, Adrian Rollini, Arthur Scott, Carl Kress, Joe Sullivan + ...
| | Butch Miles Soulmates CD (2002) (Import) Germany
Knightowl Presents Episode 13 music CDs
$16.09 Recorded live at the Amerika Haus, Hamburg, Germany on November 26, 1994. Includes liner notes by Hans Nagel-Heyer.
Butch Miles has made relatively few recordings as a leader during his long career, especially when compared to the prolific output of co-leader Howard Alden during the 1980s and 1990s, but this very enjoyable concert in Hamburg's Amerika Haus is available again as a limited-edition reissue, following its initial issue in 1995. Miles clearly knows how to propel a band, having previously served with Count Basie and the Dave Brubeck Quartet while Alden was in the process of becoming one of the most in-demand guitarists of the 1990s because of his effortlessly inventive playing and encyclopedic knowledge of songs. Trumpeter Randy Sandke, tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, and bassist Frank Tate were frequently collaborators with Alden on recording dates or in touring packages of various editions of the George Wein All Stars. The guitarist's wife, Terrie Richards Alden, adds her flirty vocals to a swinging take of "Them There Eyes," coasts along with Tate's tasty bass introduction to "I Can't Believe That You're in Love With Me," and takes a subtle approach to the brisk "What a Little Moonlight Can Do." Although the instrumental repertoire is primarily swing in nature, with imaginative treatments of warhorses like "Lady Be Good" and "Jubilee," they explore less ...
| | Gloria Lynne I Can't Give You Anything But Love CD (2002)
Knightowl Presents Episode 13 songs
$10.19 Collectables Records has already mined the 1959-1964 Gloria Lynne Everest Records catalog for a series of twofers, a couple of hits compilations, and a box set. Here, the reissue label takes a different tack in assembling a compilation, turning to the kind of selection other record companies often title "Love Songs." The concept is, of course, something of a conceit when it comes to a singer like Lynne, who sings practically nothing but love songs, but it does provide a means of putting together her takes on various standards, including two of her own chart hits, "I Wish You Love" and "Don't Take Your Love From Me." She is not always at her best interpreting show music, although her arrangers sometimes introduce novel elements, such as the organ that plays prominently in her version of "I Can't Give You Anything but Love." She does best when the material is more down to earth, seemingly having no idea how to handle a song like Lerner & Loewe's "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" from My Fair Lady (she re-orders some of the words, which doesn't help) or "Indian Love Call," but responding well to the emotional text of "Make the Man Love Me" and "You Don't Know What Love Is." ~ ...
