Tab Benoit's third album in just over two years (including his collaboration with Jimmy Thackery) is, like his previous few releases, a loose and homey affair. Recorded at the titular New Orleans studio and featuring Crescent City guests Cyril Neville and Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, along with funky Meters Brian Stoltz and George Porter sitting in on various tracks, this is a live-sounding disc with few obvious overdubs. Benoit's road band, comprised of bassist Carl DuFrene and drummer Darryl White, knows how to keep the pocket mean and lean yet flexible, giving the guitarist room to roam against the funky rhythm section. Except for an explosive cover of Howlin' Wolf's "Howlin' for My Darling" and Eddie Jones' slow blues "Sufferin' Mind," the tunes are written or co-written by Benoit. As the title of "Solid Simple Thing" suggests, these songs aren't breaking new ground, but they do allow the singer to stretch out, albeit in territory familiar to his fans. Tab Benoit's latest release on Telarc, Fever for the Bayou, continues in what has become Benoit's signature territory, a funky, ragged blend of Louisiana swamp blues and East Texas guitar, with hints of funk, soul, and country thrown in to give the gumbo just the right spice. If it sounds like a formula, well, Benoit's jagged guitar playing and increasingly soulful vocals make it clear that this is the music he loves, so it hardly matters. He touches a lot of bases here, including an eerie approximation of Elmore James' slide sound on a cover of James' "I Can't Hold Out" (which also features some cool tenor sax work from Jimmy Carpenter), then conjures Buddy Guy on Guy's "I Smell a Rat," fires up on the old Slim Harpo chestnut "Got Love if You Want It," and tears through a wonderfully swampy take on Levon Helm's "Blues So Bad" before ending things with an acoustic version of Clarence Williams' "My Bucket's Got a Hole in It" (made famous by another Williams, Hank Williams Sr.). In the early to mid-'60s, the Galaxy label was probably best known for issuing Little Johnny Taylor's big 1963 hit "Part Time Love." It also cut a lot of other sides (usually in Los Angeles) at the time that satisfyingly blended R&B, blues, and soul, often with urbane brassy arrangements. Diggin' Gold: A Galaxy of West Coast Blues collects 25 such productions from 1962-1965, some of them previously unreleased. For many soul collectors, the most eye-catching items will be the eight tracks by Little Johnny Taylor: "Part Time Love" isn't among them, but they do include three previously unreleased recordings, while the other five are LP and single cuts that hadn't previously appeared on CD. But the whole disc is solid -- surprisingly so, given how often many single-label rarity anthologies offer more archival value than entertainment. Much of the material will recall Ray Charles as the most frequent reference point in its blues-R&B-jazz mix (and, much less strongly, Bobby "Blue" Bland and B.B. King), and while Los Angeles R&B had been doing that since the late '40s and early '50s, these well-produced sides have a more modern feel that makes them more akin to bluesy soul than early R&B. While the Taylor collectibles on this disc are decent (and he's the only really familiar name in the artist roster), they aren't necessarily the standouts. Bill McAfee's "I Don't Know Why" is one of the most dead-on emulations of early-'60s Ray Charles you'll hear, and Joe Johnson's "Rattlesnake, Baby, Rattlesnake" and "Gold Digging Man" push the CD closest to '60s dance soul.
