Bio/Filmographies; Soundtrack English; Behind The Scenes Filmmaker Costa-Gavras (Z, MISSING) has a reputation for controversial political cinema, and he does not fail to raise eyebrows with AMEN. Focusing on the Vatican's unwillingness to oppose the Holocaust, and two men who tried to change the system from within, AMEN is adapted from the play THE REPRESENTATIVE by Rolf Hochhuth. It is based on a true story about officer Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur), a Nazi soldier who moved up the SS ranks by devising a chemical method to purify soldiers' drinking water. Gerstein is unaware of the horrors of the concentration camps until he is recruited by "The Doctor" (Ulrich Muhe) to adapt the same chemical for use in the gas chambers. Though Gerstein is overwhelmed by the reality of the impending massacre, he does not turn a blind eye. He informs the Swedes, the German Protestant Church, and even the Vatican. But he is sent away, dismissed, and otherwise silenced by all but the tenacious Father Riccardo Fontana (Mathieu Kassovitz), a fictitious character based on a number of priests who fought against the Holocaust. Father Riccardo takes life-threatening risks in a fruitless effort to convince the cardinal (Michel Duchaussoy) and the Pope (Marcel Iures) to rise above their fears of Nazi retribution. January 31, 2003 (LA) Amen Reviews: "There is an excellent performance from Ulrich Tukur....Handsomely shot..."
-- Geoffrey Macnab, Sight and Sound "...AMEN has such immediacy and briskness that we are caught up in the increasingly risky actions of Gerstein and Fontana....AMEN is a handsome period production of fluidity and subtlety, intimate and large-scale..."

$22.15 CITIZEN KANE is Orson Welles's greatest achievement--and a landmark of cinema history. The story charts the rise and fall of a newspaper publisher whose wealth and power ultimately isolates him in his castle-like refuge. The film's protagonist, Charles Foster Kane, was based on a composite of Howard Hughes and William Randolph Hearst--so much so that Hearst tried to have the film suppressed. Every aspect of the production marked an advance in film language: the deep focus and deeply shadowed cinematography (from Gregg Toland); the discontinuous narrative, relying heavily on flashbacks and newsreel footage (propelled by a script largely written by Herman L. Mankiewicz); the innovative use of sound and score (sound by Bailey Fesler and James G. Stewart, music composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann); and the ensemble acting forged in the fires of Welles's Mercury Theatre (featuring the film debuts of, among others, Joseph Cotten, Everett Sloane, and Agnes Moorehead). Every moment of the film, every shot, has been choreographed to perfection. The film is essential viewing, quite possibly the greatest film ever made and, along with THE BIRTH OF A NATION, certainly the most influential.
This 2-disc DVD set features the Orson Welles masterwork that expanded filmmaking frontiers like no other movie: the fascinating story of a ruthless publishing magnate's rise to fame and influence - climaxing in the ...

$10.39 This lyrical and graphic documentary--one of the first cinematic reflections on the Holocaust's horror--has deeply affected film's treatment of the Holocaust ever since, including Spielberg's SCHINDLER'S LIST. Documentarian Alain Resnais contrasts 1955 footage of abandoned concentration camps' quiet, empty buildings with black-and-white footage shot there in 1944; the film's overwhelming resonance comes in its allowing the haunting images to stand on their own: a grainy, back-lit hill of human hair, a pyramid of shoes.
Ten years after the liberation of ...
