Slim Dusty was one of the greatest country artists of all time. The reason that that statement would seem insane to many music fans is due to the fact that they've probably never heard of him. Dusty (real name David Gordon Kirkpatrick) was an Australian who released more than 100 albums in a 60-year recording career while garnering a swag of gold and platinum records, awards, and honors and becoming a reluctant legend in his own lifetime. (Upon his death on September 19, 2003, at age 76, Dusty was accorded a state funeral.) It is fitting, then, that such a career be summed up in a greatest-hits collection and The Very Best of Slim Dusty does an admirable job, considering the vast wealth of material available to draw from. Dusty's best-loved numbers are here, including his signature song and sole international hit, "A Pub with No Beer." Other highlights include his last prominent song "Looking Forward, Looking Back" (penned by Don Walker, keyboard player for famed Aussie rockers Cold Chisel), the mateship number "Duncan," the Aussie-lingo lesson of "G'day G'day," and Slim's version of Australia's unofficial national anthem, "Waltzing Matilda." Then there's the trucker song "Lights on the Hill," the catchy black-sheep tale "The Biggest Disappointment," and the infectiously upbeat "Cunnamulla Fella." Much of this music derives from traditional American country music, but all of it has been indubitably seared with an Australian branding iron. The stories -- or "yarns," to use the Aussie vernacular -- are replete with the images and idiosyncrasies of the "Sunburnt Country" and its people, and delivered with a wink and a smile. Dusty's songs not only reflect Australian culture, they are Australian culture. A plain-looking, plain-voiced gentleman in an Akubra hat with a downturned brim, Slim Dusty knew the rhythm of the Australian pulse. His is inclusive music, all-inclusive -- you don't need to know the songs or the places they speak of to feel moved. The melodies are sometimes sweet, sometimes salty, and the language is that of the "everyman." In iconic terms, it would not be incorrect to say that Slim Dusty was, and is, Australia's Elvis. The Very Best of Slim Dusty is more than a record. To many people it is the poetry of a nation and the legacy of a fair dinkum national treasure. ~ Adrian Zupp

Very Best Of Slim Dusty CD music
$18.39 There was a lot riding on the Benny Goodman band's 1938 performance at Carnegie Hall; perhaps the future of jazz itself. It was the first time jazz had been presented on the stage of a major concert hall instead of in a club or bar, and all eyes were on Goodman and company to see if the "legitimization" of swing would hold or falter. ...

$14.79 When Tony is asked where he's from, he often says, rather candidly, that he "came out of the hollers of West Virginia when [he] was twenty-five." Most of his family, including his father, his close and distant cousins, and practically all of his aunts and uncles, sing and play an instrument. His family reunions, which used to be more than 500 to 1000 members strong, would always include gospel family groups, bluegrass bands and pickers from all over West Virginia in Tony's family tree. "Music has been a part of my life ever since I can remember," Tony says," and it always will be."In 1993, Tony and The Dixie Flyer Band won a talent contest then called The True Value Country Showdown, sponsored by the ...

Very Best Of Slim Dusty CD music
$17.05 Evan Sornstein's great appreciation for the unfettered humanity of E.E. Cummings is celebrated on this suite of twenty-two poems, read by twenty-two different people evenly spaced around the world. Set against an evocative, electronic backdrop of detailed soundscape, Nowever explores life and meaning, searching for Cummings' "truths" through his own works, interpreted by the voices of glad and young, aged and ageless - busy monsters all - from Taipei to Glasgow, Sardinia to California."...poetry and every other art was and is and forever will be strictly and distinctly a question of individuality..." - E.E. Cummings (1953)INTERVIEW::::::::1) What was the impetus behind the creation of this suite?I've been interested in linking text to music for a while and was finishing up a twenty-minute piece with cut-ups of a poem by William Blake called Auguries of Innocence. And at the end of working on this, I was complaining to a friend that working so long on one piece was wearing me down. He then suggested that I do a suite of really short pieces, say, less than a minute each. So I thought about this and it immediately occurred to me that there are many poems from E.E. Cummings that would make some very interesting material. Now, it's important for me to step back for a moment: I don't really like poetry. It never meant much to me - except E.E. Cummings. When I was a kid, my father showed me three poets, and one of them, I think now, really set the stage for how I was to proceed with creating from that point on. Somehow, Cummings poetry made sense to me. His work is clever, direct, and profound in a way that no one else has accomplished. So many of his poems have distinct personality, so I decided to pick a number of poems that could match the different ways people speak English. I chose a particular poem that matched a person and then composed the music to be 'a setting' that supported the poem. So, in time, they became portraits of sorts, as well. The poems themselves became the vehicle for showing ...
