Cal Tjader Quintet: Cal Tjader (vibraphone); Joe Kloess (piano); Paul Warburton (bass); Mike Buono (drums); Armando Perazza (congas). Recorded live at the Red Onion, Aspen, Colorado in 1968. This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Vibraphonist Cal Tjader is in typically fine form on this live set from 1968. His quintet at the time featured Armand Perazza on congas and pianist Joe Kloess and his repertoire ranged from Afro-Cuban jazz to occasional straightahead tunes. Six of the eight selections on this date are originals by band members or Gary McFarland. Although Tjader had been playing this style of music for 15 years by this time, he still was quite creative and enthusiastic, and is heard throughout in excellent form. ~ Scott Yanow **Super Audio CD (SACD) Hybrid** This CD will play in standard CD players. A Super Audio CD player is required to take advantage of the SACD sound technology. Latin + Jazz = Cal Tjader Music Latin + Jazz = Cal Tjader Songs | 1. | Armando's Quajira |

The wildly dynamic SIX LITANIES TO HELIOGABALUS finds avant-garde composer/saxophonist John Zorn calling upon the fierce trio of vocalist Mike Patton, bassist Trevor Dunn, and drummer Joey Baron, who were featured on 2006's MOONCHILD and ASTRONOME, for a set of restless tracks inspired by the notorious Roman emperor of the title, also known as Elagabalus. Bolstering the already-potent sound of the group are a female choir, organ player Jamie Saft, electronics expert Ikue Mori, and Zorn himself, resulting in an alternately beautiful and frightening album. In 2006, John Zorn issued two recordings that were the first two volumes in the realization of a project that, as he put it in his notes to the second volume, a methodology "combining the hypnotic intensity of ritual ...
