Backed by the mainstream success of "Don't Wanna Try" -- a Top 40 hit in the U.S. -- Sony Discos released what amounts to a Spanish-language version of Frankie J.'s What's a Man to Do. Apart from the change in language, nothing much differentiates this self-titled full-length from its predecessor. The amount of emotion is the same, and the vocal talent is as present as ever, so it'll certainly please his Latino fan base. Another positive aspect of the disc is that it isn't weighed down by the out-of-character posturing that held back What's a Man to Do. If he plays his cards right, Frankie J. will have a long, accomplished career ahead of him. ~ Andy Kellman

Frankie J album
$9.55 Although Frankie J's WHAT'S A MAN TO DO is pushed along by hip-hop-derived rhythms and production, he's an old-school soul singer at heart. That's not to say that there are homages to Marvin Gaye or Al Green here, simply that J eschews the hyper-melismatic approach of many lesser contemporaries in favor of a smooth, understated style that values hooks and melody over vocal showboating. Frankie's first and foremost a romantic balladeer, and while there are a couple of percolating tracks, this is mostly an album of slow jams built on and for intimacy. J knows just how much to put into his performances without overextending himself, and he remains a believable seductor throughout. Things end on a nice touch with the Spanish-language, ...
| | David Bisbal Buleria CD (2004)
Frankie J CD music
$11.49 Paul Simon has argued that an artist's debut album is often his or her best because when artists have a lot on their minds and finally get a chance to record, the results can be unusually inspired. Simon's theory would explain the dreaded sophomore curse; second albums, in some cases, are disappointing because the artist has already used up many of his or her best ideas. Of course, there have been numerous sophomore albums that were anything but disappointing -- Led Zeppelin II, Madonna's Like a Virgin, Ice-T's Power -- and David Bisbal shows no signs of a sophomore slump on his second album, Bulería. The Spanish pop singer showed considerable promise on his first album, Corazón Latino, and is equally triumphant on this follow-up. Some of the credit for Bulería's excellence goes to the prolific Kike Santander, who produced this 2004 release and wrote or co-wrote many of the songs. Thanks to Santander, Bisbal has a lot of great material to work with -- and he sings with much conviction on exuberant, flamenco-influenced offerings like "Oye el Boom," "Camina y Ven," and the hit title track. Bisbal is far from a traditional flamenco artist -- his orientation is Latin pop -- but he does incorporate flamenco elements on some of the disc's up-tempo items. And on "Cómo Olvidar?" he draws on both flamenco and Afro-Cuban salsa. The singer is equally captivating on the 51-minute CD's romantic ballads, which show an awareness of Julio Iglesias. Perhaps Iglesias is too obvious and easy a comparison; still, it's hard not to think ...
| | Frankie J One CD (2005)
Frankie J music CDs
$7.59 For Frankie J's 2005 album, THE ONE, the Mexican-born crooner offers up an impressive collection of songs helmed by a noteworthy array of producers, including Mario Winans and Irv Gotti. And while these established music-makers could have turned out an Usher clone, the man born Francisco Javier Bautista maintained enough creative control to craft more of a sensitive, balladeer persona for himself. The singer's style is exemplified by the lush "Story of My Life," with acoustic-guitar accompaniment and a pleading tone that's more yearning than desperate. Throughout THE ONE, however, J's Latin roots are never far away, as he croons Spanish couplets amid the snappy beats of the R&B-flavored remake of Aventura's bachata hit "Obsession (No Es Amor)," which features rapper Baby Bash. J's falsetto rings convincingly on the Winans-produced Jodeci-like jam "Can't Say It's Love" and the title track, with its perfect blend of clavinet, strings, and backing vocals. Even when the vibe gets a bit rougher, as with "On the Floor," Frankie J holds his own. As a bonus, THE ONE tacks on extra cuts, including an all-Spanish reading of "Obsession (No Es Amor)."

| | Aventura God's Project CD (2005)
Frankie J songs
$13.85 Since its formation in the Bronx, New York in 1994, Dominican boy band Aventura has been steadily expanding its sound toward a style that incorporates hip-hop, R&B, rock, merengue, and reggaeton, while still retaining strong traces of traditional bachata. GOD'S PROJECT is the culmination of Aventura's stylistic expansion, and is the group's most mature, diverse, and accomplished album.
The sounds of bachata--the quartet's foundation--are still prominent, especially on "Ciego de Amor," which features a cameo by Antony Santos, one of the Dominican Republic's leading bachata artists (not to be confused with Aventura's own Anthony "Romeo" Santos). The group also ventures deep into reggaeton territory on the likes of "Ella y Yo" (which stars reggaeton kingpin Don Omar). Various international flavors work their way into the mix, particularly the samples of Asian music that crop up here and there, and the strains of traditional flamenco on ...

$15.89 On PRICELESS, Frankie J's follow-up to his 2005 breakthrough album, THE ONE, the Latino vocalist presents another potent set of hip-hop-laden R&B. With his smooth voice and immediately catchy tunes, the singer (aka Francisco Javier Bautista) confidently mines the same pop-tinged stutter-funk terrain as Justin Timberlake and Usher, particularly on "That Girl," an infectious, beat-driven ...

| | Siberia Damage CD (1997)
Frankie J songs
$13.69 Taking their name from the massive, barren tundra of Northern Russia, this duo, consists of evocative purring vocalist Randy Farmer and guitarist John West Mitchell. "Siberia is a band with a moody, brooding complex artistic vision and the haunting lyrics and touching vocals on Damage are perfectly tragic enough to move any listener. A deadly but on the mark combination by Randy & John on this their debut album.""Usually revealing personal misfortunes and broken relationships the songs soon settle into tender, soft coated folk rock mood, enhanced by stimulating, lingering guitar tones, with atmospheric settings that provide Randy with an acoustic bed for her hushed, often spoken lyrics." "The baffling tones of Siberia can be classified among the alternative genius of bands like Ivy and Veruca Salt" This collection of 13 songs is textured and ambient but with enough complexity and arrangement to hold your attention, it's relatively mellow but slightly sinister. This CD has so many great moments and stand out tracks include: Black Car, Story Ave, Peter, Sorry, Trailer Park Blues, Same Old Story and She Doesn't Live Here Anymore. Guest stars on Damage include Vinnie Miranda (Dido) & Nir Z (John Mayer, Genesis) Other CD's by Siberia include:"Harms Way" which was released on Siberia's own label Little Pony Records and is available on cdbaby and siberiaband . Farmer & Mitchell recently completed their 3rd CD and chose to use a different band name for this project. Of Love ...
| | Passport Doldinger Jubille Concert CD (1975)
Frankie J album
$9.69 Recorded live at Onkel Po's Carnegie Hall, Hamburg, Germany on August 28-29, 1975. Includes liner notes by Arthur Levy.
It's a curious fact that the presence of virtuoso guests on a live album can sometimes subtract from the actual quality of the performance. So it is on this release, which features splendid players like Les McCann, Buddy Guy, Pete York, and Philip Catherine on a mixed set of Passport favorites and standards. Unfortunately, the word that best describes most of the performances is overheated. The thing that makes Passport's work special is the uncommon delicacy with which arranger Klaus Doldinger straddles the line between jazz and rock. Alas, on Doldinger Jubilee '75, everything is played at full throttle, with a busy percussion background that doesn't leave space for pauses and soft passages. At times the result is embarrassing, with the band showing great enthusiasm but a complete loss of subtlety. Listeners are left with Passport the high-energy rock band, which is good as far as energetic rock bands go, but not up to the level expected from this band or these soloists. ~ Richard Foss

Alas, on Doldinger Jubilee '75, everything is played at full throttle, with a busy percussion background that doesn't leave space for pauses and soft passages. At times the result is embarrassing. The nadir is the band's version of "I Just Want to Make Love to You" (included as a "bonus track" on the 2001 Wounded Bird label reissue), which reduces brilliant musicians to sounding like a blues bar band. In contrast, Doldinger's "Ready for Takeoff" is a vastly superior track. Elsewhere, the band shows great enthusiasm but a complete loss of subtlety. | | Thee Headcoats Sect Ready Sect Go! CD (1999) (Import) United Kingdom
Frankie J album
$22.35 The Downliners Sect were the most unapologetically rough band to emerge from the British R&B explosion of the '60s (as well as one of the wittiest), so its no great surprise that the U.K.'s leading rock & roll primitive, Billy Childish, would happen to be a big fan. What one might not expect is just how well Childish's band Thee Headcoats would collaborate with former Downliners Sect men Don Craine and Keith Grant; on Ready Sect Go!, Thee Headcoats Sect (featuring Craine and Grant teaming up with Childish and his bandmates Bruce Brand and Johnny Johnson) tear though a dozen songs (two new numbers from Childish and ten classic covers) with a gritty swagger that flatters the style of both acts. While Childish's recording projects often sound like three or four guys bashing away in a garage as documented by a cheap boom box (which usually plays like a virtue), on Ready Sect Go! Craine and Grant bring a modicum of professionalism to the project, and Liam Watson's monophonic engineering clearly captures a band that's tight, powerful and disciplined without losing their rough edges. At the same time, Childish's back-to-basics world view complements the gutsy, elemental attack of Craine's guitar and Grant's bass work, and with the exception of the Pirates' excellent comeback recordings in the '70s and '80s, you'd be hard pressed to name a "reunion" effort from a classic British beat group that delivers as much potent rock action as Thee Headcoats Sect generate in these sessions. Ready Sect Go! is a superb meeting of the minds between two schools of like-minded U.K. rockers, and fans of British beat ...
