On their second album, the perpetually dark-clad Black Rebel Motorcycle Club offers another set of feedback-drenched songs. Though the band still wears its Jesus & Mary Chain influence on its leather sleeves, TAKE THEM ON, ON YOUR OWN reveals a refined sound that hints at other musical forebears. The opening track, "Stop," rocks like a latter-day Oasis tune, while "We're All in Love" is carried along by a slinky Stones-like riff. Although wide-screen, Ride-inspired epics are no longer the order of the day for the brooding lads of BRMC, their renewed focus is evident on TAKE's furiously concise anthems. Just to mix things up a bit, the Rebels add a vaguely political tone to a number of tracks and even bust out the acoustic guitars on "And I'm Aching." In a pleasant surprise, the trio saves some of its finest songs, such as "Suddenly" and "Rise or Fall," for the end, rounding out their solid sophomore outing.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Peter Hayes, Robert Turner (vocals, guitar, bass); Nick Jago (drums, percussion).
Rolling Stone (9/18/03, p.71) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...The L.A. trio sticks with Jesus and Mary Chain-style swirly, fuzz-drenched rock on TAKE THEM ON, ON YOUR OWN but puts its imprint onto the sound..." Entertainment Weekly (9/5/03, pp.74-5) - "...The dynamics...whip you around like a Tilt-A-Whirl before launching into a zero-gravity coda..." - Rating: B Uncut (9/03, p.110) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...It noisily takes you back to the days when rock'n'roll was the place where all the weirdos and outsiders hung out..." CMJ (9/1/03, p.8) - "...The perpetually black-clad trio returns darker, cooler, and more convicted than ever before..." Mojo (Publisher) (9/03, pp.98-9) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...A nuggety fusion of classic rock and surrealistic pop....EARTHQUAKE GLUE exudes an unshakeable ring of confidence..." Record Collector (magazine) (p.82) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "In 2003 they returned with TAKE THEM ON, ON YOUR OWN, proffering a sleeker, more sanguine sound which was discernibly their own." This is even better than the first excellent offering This album rocks-out from the get-go! From the Duane-Eddy-esque intro baseline and lots of deep reverberating wah-guitar breaks on the opening track Stop, the first song signals the quality of music that's to be expected for the rest of the album.Better than the first, but definitely no less original. Pure inspiration in a world polluted with punk-pop-/numetal-rap rubbish.

Still rings to me after two years since this release It's still a good album that I've purchased when the single Stop made headway on Loudtested, a Muchmusic program that they post on the internet and on the tele. The drummer almost left but when they settle differences, they score music. Hi-five!!!!! Submitted by skank992002 (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
It ain't bad, it ain't bad @ all from this band's album I like distortion but it can be a bit of a burden for the old if you get what I mean. I heard this trio is still young. Too bad they were dropped by Virgin after completing this album. You know about label politicking especially Virgin's. One review trashes these guys, the other doesn't mind. I embrace. Peace :) Submitted by skank992002 (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Take Them On, On Your Own
$11.69 The brooding Los Angeles-based Black Rebel Motorcycle Club belies its roots in sunny California with a dark, edgy sound that is indebted to 1980s/early-'90s British shoegazer bands, particularly the architects of the sound, Jesus & Mary Chain. While many bands take at least a few albums to work up to their full sonic range, the BRMC presents a dense, wide-screen set of songs on its ...

Take Them On, On Your Own
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire ...

| | Television Adventure CD (1978) Remastered; Digipak
Take Them On, On Your Own
$9.29 Television's second album arrived a year after the band's remarkable 1977 debut, MARQUEE MOON. The eight songs again feature the intertwining guitars of Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd in a way that recalls both the glory days of San Francisco ballroom bands and the finesse of shimmering pop music. In the late '70s, Television was lumped together with other bands that came out of a New York City scene that had an epicenter at the club CBGB. As time has passed, the band has truly become an entity unto itself. Television's music shows none of the dulling effects of age, and its first ...
