Much like its stylistic cousin TOTALLY R&B, the TOTALLY HIP HOP collection also casts a fairly wide net in defining its own genre. The inclusion of Mystikal ("Boucin' Back [Bumpin' Me Against the Wall]") and Ludacris ("Gossip Folks") on this collection falls into the no-brainer category, but when names like Justin Timberlake ("[Oh No] What You Got"), Brandy ("What About Us?"), and Christina Aguilera ("Dirrty") pop up, even the most open-minded rap fan will be surprised. The rationale lies in a generation of younger artists weaned on hip-hop who've let its influence bleed into their music, using hot producers like the Neptunes to get their creative point across.
Analytical observations aside, the rest of this anthology stays fairly true to the course by erecting a tent big enough to house hot Brooklyn talent Fabolous ("4 Ever," "This Is My Party") alongside dancehall reggae superstars Wayne Wonder ("No Letting Go") and Sean Paul ("Gimme the Light"). Talent from south of the Mason-Dixon line also gets its props, whether its Petey Pablo ("Raise Up"), Clipse ("Young Boy"), or Hotlanta's Outkast ("So Fresh, So Clean").

| | Very Best Of The Spinners CD (1993)
Totally Hip Hop
$8.19 The Spinners were rivaled only by the O'Jays as the greatest Philly soul group, and for that matter the greatest vocal group of the '70s. For listeners who don't want to dig as deeply as the excellent double-CD anthology One of a Kind Love Affair, Rhino's The Very Best of the Spinners is a stellar single-disc career summary that offers a concentrated dose of the group's sweet soul magic. It also serves as a primer on the best work of Thom Bell, Philly soul's "other" great producer besides the legendary Gamble & Huff team. Incredibly, every one of the 16 tracks here -- culled from 1970-1980 -- reached the R&B Top Ten, and half went all the way to number one on either the pop or R&B lists. As this collection demonstrates, the Spinners' massive popularity was well-deserved. ...

Hailing from Atlanta, GA, the hardcore trio Lil Jon & the East Side Boyz are the premier practitioners of the southern rap sub-genre colloquially dubbed "crunk." The style is exemplified by forceful, primal beats, over-the-top, chanted vocals, and a bad-boy/party-hardy attitude that bypasses gangta cool in search of a pure visceral, hedonist high. Accordingly, there's little subtlety to be found on KINGS OF CRUNK, and rightfully so. Would you really want to hear a tender love ballad from leather-lunged badass Lil Jon? Wisely, ...
