a lot of bootleg cuts ... if your a fan or completist buy it -- if you're a first time listener buy soft machine volumes 1 and 2 on the same cd

4 stars A bowl of psychedelia
This is certainly a mixed bowl. Some of this material is "leftovers", but other parts are inspired and intense and these are the parts that justifies this buy. I have heard lots of bootleg Soft Machine, and the second part of disc 2 is the best live material I've ever heard.

PANGAEA was the last album Miles Davis made before his 5 year retirement. Recorded live at Osaka Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan on February 1, 1975. Includes liner notes by Kevin Whitehead. The companion set to AGARTHA, PANGAEA presents the Davis band in that evening's concert performance at Osaka Festival Hall on February 1, 1975. The difference in moods is readily apparent, as the band comes out on fire--particularly the trumpeter, who was in a more reticent mood during the afternoon's festivities. Its musical merits notwithstanding, this best-of compilation may just be the first of its kind in that the songs are arranged in reverse chronological order, beginning with the most recent (in this case "Bulletproof," from 1998's DIZZY UP THE GIRL). In any case, this aural document of the Doll's 15-year recording career (interesting historical perspective: that's twice as long as the Beatles) is an all but perfect snapshot of their ability to combine pop hooks, punk guitars, and blue-collar angst into one passionate, accessible package. The collection itself is impeccably crafted. The song selection is just about ideal (although fans may bemoan the absence of "Long Way Down," from A BOY NAMED GOO). Nearly everything has been remixed (which means the older songs have more or less the same aural sheen as the more expensively produced recent material) and there's a particularly nice bonus in a way-overdue studio version of long-time concert favorite "Two Days in February."
