While the men who populated the roster of Chess Records during the legendary label's heyday have historically received the lion's share of attention -- not much of a surprise, given that Chess played host to Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Willie Dixon, Bo Diddley, and Chuck Berry -- its distaff acts nevertheless deserve more of the spotlight than they've been given; the 20-track Chess Divas is a good start, assembling both major hits and unjustly neglected highlights that capture the full scope of the Chess sound during the 1960s. Fontella Bass' "Rescue Me" -- the best record that Aretha Franklin never made -- is the obvious marquee inclusion here, trailed closely by Etta James' "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and Koko Taylor's "Wang Dang Doodle." But the set also showcases lesser-known classics like Sugar Pie DeSanto's "Slip in Mules," a pair of cuts from the criminally unknown Chicago soul chanteuse Mitty Collier ("I Had a Talk With My Man Last Night" and "Sharing You"), and even "This Time Tomorrow," a standout from Tammy Montgomery -- far better known for her Motown-era work as Tammi Terrell. ~ Jason Ankeny
Budget-price compilation highlights the Chess label's female roster with such soul legends as Etta James, Koko Taylor, Irma Thomas & Big Maybelle, to name just a few. Features 20 tracks guaranteed to stir your soul. Spectrum. 2003.

Chess Divas album
$11.49 Despite its title, Hail Unamerican!, the 11-song debut album by rising San Diego metalcore-punk quartet Underminded, is largely apolitical and deeply seated in the same American movement that spawned similar bands like Atreyu and Thrice. And come to think of it, the band's guitar assault frequently resembles the latter, specifically on the incendiary "This Inquisition." If the apocalyptic, thrash-happy scorcher "Burn the Metropolis" -- replete with a fat-bottomed thump, chaotic chants, and a feral breakdown -- or the maniacal screams of "It's Kinda Like a Bodybag" don't grab you by the jugular, perhaps nothing will. Vocalist Nick Martin typically forgoes melody in favor of the raw aggression he best documents on the mind-blowing experimental opener, "Pablo Escobar's Secret Stash: Revisited." Hail Unamerican! is definitely not for the timid, but fans of bands like Alexisonfire, Darkest Hour, or the aforementioned Thrice should like it just the same. ~ John D. Luerssen
It's not easy coming from a town where you're in a league of your own. Case in point, Underminded, who hail from San Diego, Calif., a city that's best known in the underground rock community as a fertile breeding ground of pop-punk acts for the past decade, or as the land of the avant-garde spock rock that's generally off most radars.Instead, Underminded had to form its own clique, since the foursome subscribes to neither genre of the border city's independent rock soundscape. What the group does present is a well-coordinated, punishing metal-based hardcore intensity, fueled solely by the abnormalities and unfortunate idiosyncrasies of society. Happy-go-lucky pop punk and freaked-out, angular experimentalism this is not. Enter hail unamerican!, Underminded's debut album, released via Los Angeles-based Kung Fu Records. Not only does hail unamerican! usher in a refreshingly new spirit to the Kung Fu roster - one that's ...
