This is a self-titled album from the heavy metal band Strapping Young Lad.
The press release for SYL points out that the inspiration behind the album was borne out of the horror surrounding the events of 9/11, and, later, says bluntly, "This is, without question, war music." And while the music certainly sounds like Armageddon, the lyrics are in fact angry, incredulous diatribes against not only the futility of war, but rape, hypocrisy, and hate. Devin Townsend's sense of humor surfaces here and there, particularly in "Dirt Pride" ("dripping...gigbutt; dirt pride...my pride; dripping...bunksock"), but without the lyric sheet you wouldn't hear it; Strapping Young Lad's apocalyptic death metal soundscapes are the aural equivalent of endlessly spraying shrapnel, or the nightmare hum of locusts, or the earth swallowing itself. Meanwhile, the ethereal keyboard washes and occasional bits of melodic singing only heighten the biblical intensity. Not for the faint of heart. ~ Andy Hinds

Few death metal bands live on as long as Morbid Angel. Over the years, the Florida headbangers changed labels, parted way with their lead singer, and endured varying levels of popularity as their style of music fell in and out of favor among metalheads. Yet despite all the ups and downs over the years, Morbid Angel continued to make music, record albums, and tour extensively. In fact, before the release of Heretic in 2003, they'd toured America with the mighty Pantera and garnered more mass-market exposure than they ever had previously. It's not really a surprise then that Heretic sounds so lively. Veterans or not, Morbid Angel are anything but short on enthusiasm here. Their musicianship is as inventive as ever, especially that of guitar-god Trey Azagthoth, and their songwriting as impassioned as ever, especially that of lyricist/vocalist/bassist Steve Tucker. Taking into account the tattoos, nose rings, and spiky haircuts, one might be forgiven for instantly pegging Lit as a punk-pop band no different from a dozen other Orange County, California combos. One listen to the group's recordings, however, reveals what Lit fans have always known--the band creates some of the most diverse and well-crafted music of its genre. On the group's self-titled fourth album, Lit's trademark Cheap Trick-esque power-pop is very much in evidence, but the sound is fleshed out with echoes of Kiss, Billy Squier, Foghat, and a host of other 1970s and '80s arena rockers. Standout tracks include "Lullaby," a Dashboard Confessional-like life-on-the-road weeper, and "Forever Begins Right Now," a bouncy British Invasion-style rave-up.
