Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned album for sale Product Description

Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned album for sale by Donnie Elbert was released Nov 25, 2003 on the Collectables label. Donnie Elbert's initial run as a solo artist happened in the late '50s with a series of singles recorded for the King subsidiary Deluxe. All of those sides are collected here, including his one chart hit, the soul-squeezing falsetto masterpiece "What Can I Do." Elbert spent the next decade as a soul gypsy traveling from small label to even smaller label for a single or two before moving on to the next (don't worry, he eventually found a home in the '70s with All Platinum). Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned CD music contains a single disc with 22 songs.   ...See Full Description

Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned songs All tracks have been digitally remastered using 24-bit technology. The Very Best of the Originals includes their hits from the late '60s through the mid-'70s, along with some LP cuts, B-sides, and unreleased tracks. The first six songs were produced or co-produced by Marvin Gaye in 1969 and 1970 (including the hits "Baby I'm for Real" and "The Bells"). These have been sometimes cited as forerunners to his What's Going On album, but it would be wrong to view them as a What's Going On supplement. They're in much more of a lush, group vocal, sweet soul style, although some traces of ideas Gaye would play with in the early '70s are present, particularly in the way the background voices weave around each other. The one previously unreleased Gaye production, "Just to Keep You Satisfied," would be reworked, with the same backing track and backing vocals but with a different lead vocal and lyrics, on Gaye's Let's Get It On album. The rest of the tracks are largely in a competent sweet soul mold, also including "Suspicion," a previously unreleased Holland-Dozier-Holland number from 1966 with a more up-tempo sound; "Game Called Love," a 1974 cut composed and produced by Stevie Wonder; and "Down to Love Town," a 1976 disco smash. ~ Richie Unterberger Personnel: Marvin Gaye (vocals); Hank Dixon (tenor); Walter Gaines (baritone). Audio Remasterer: Jeff Willens. Liner Note Author: Adam White. Recording information: 1968-1970. Arrangers: Gene Page; H.B. Barnum; Marvin Gaye; Paul Riser; Tom Baird; David Van De Pitte. Personnel includes: Marvin Gaye (background vocals). Producers include: Marvin Gaye, Ivy Joe Hunter, Stevie Wonder, Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier.

Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned CD music The Hard to Find 45s on CD series is a very subjective -- and some would say guaranteed to start an argument or fight at your next party with loudmouth music freaks -- batch of compilation recordings that focuses on various aspects of genre-specific music and time periods. This set centers itself on country tunes that became crossover successes from the 1950s through the urban(e) cowboy era in 1982 and pop music that charted by country artists. Some tracks would have been impossible to exclude, such as Lefty Frizzell's number one country chart smash "Saginaw, Michigan," even if it scored a lowly number 85 on the pop chart. Same goes for Leroy Van Dyke's reading of Isaac Hayes' "Walk on By," which scored a number five in pop and didn't chart in the country Top 40, and Ferlin Husky's "Gone," which went to the top of the country list and scored a number four in pop. They are included as evidence of "marginal" crossovers and provided the template by which other recordings would be measured, recorded, and released -- at least in the singles and jukebox markets. But there are some forgotten gems here as well, including the Marvin Rainwater nugget "Gonna Find Me a Bluebird," Ned Miller's awesome floor-burner "From a Jack to a King," and the Bellamy Brothers' deeply philosophical and sensitive ballad "If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me?" Some of the choices here are pure pop schmaltz done by supposedly genre-specific artists, such as Sylvia's schlocky piece of radio trash "Nobody" and Tom Jones trying to cash in on the cowboy mug-shot parade (so did Engelbert Humperdinck but he didn't chart) with his read of Greenaway and Mason's "Say You'll Stay Until Tomorrow." Ultimately, it is in two unlikely candidates that the zenith of this pop culture truth is realized: B.J. Thomas' "(Hey Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song" and Roy Clark's magnificent and tender "Yesterday When I Was Young." The Thomas track topped both charts. There must be some other kind of logic at work here given the inclusion of Lefty's brother David's 1982 country hit "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home," which topped the country chart and didn't place in pop. There are plenty of those. Plenty! Why is this one here? Perhaps it's the compiler's perverse sense of humor -- or that he just liked the song a hell of a lot and felt it should have been a chartbuster on both lists. Ah, the beauty of independent labels. ~ Thom Jurek Here's another high quality collection in the best-selling "Hard-To-Find" series, this time covering pop and country crossover hits (file under "oldies"!). 13 of the 21 tracks made the Pop Top 20 and 12 of them hit #1 on country charts, and ll but 5 trac Includes liner notes by Greg Adams. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Liner Note Author: Greg Adams .

Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned buy CD music Scoring an unexpected novelty hit with the title track in 1956, Henry disappeared from the charts for four years before roaring back with two smashes in the early '60s, "(I Don't Know Why) But I Do" and "You Always Hurt the One You Love." Actually, Clarence recorded a fair number of singles for Chess' Argo subsidiary between 1956 and 1964 in the relaxed New Orleans R&B styles of his big hits. Ain't Got No Home includes 18 of these sides, most of which were previously unavailable on U.S. album. Henry developed slightly over the course of his career, adding beefier horn sections that occasionally reached back to the spirit of Dixieland. Crescent City legends like saxophonist Lee Allen and pianists Allen Toussaint and Paul Gayton crop up on these sessions; when Henry traveled to Memphis for a session, he was backed by the all-star band of Bill Justis (guitar), Boots Randolph (sax), and Floyd Cramer (piano). A bit more eccentric and unpredictable than Fats Domino, not as contemporary or inventive as, say, Lee Dorsey, Henry's vocals were consistently warm and humorous, his recordings always polished. That said, the hits remain the standouts on this collection. The rest is pleasant and fun, but don't vary much from the prototype or cause exceptional interest. A couple tracks worth noting are "I Love You, Yes I Do," an R&B ballad subsequently covered by several acts during the '60s, and the 1964 single "Long Lost and Worried," written by a young Dr. John. The informative booklet includes a neat photo of Clarence with the Beatles, ironic considering that the British Invasion made types like Clarence an anachronism. ~ Richie Unterberger

Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned album for sale Recorded between 1970 & 1975. Includes liner notes by Rickey Vincent. While "Smiling Faces Sometimes" was unquestionably their biggest commercial success, the Undisputed Truth had many an underground soul circuit success with other hits over their decade-long career. This compiles a dozen of their greatest hits, starting with the aforementioned big hit and tearing through to Whitfield compositions that would become hits for other bands, "Ball of Confusion" and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." The group members leave no room to question whether they were talented or not, as song after song they exemplify how in sync they were with one another and feature extended song workouts similar in vein to early Parliament jam sessions. This is nowhere near as thorough as 2002's Essential Collection, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, as only die-hard fans would be interested in that much comprehensive material. This would be an ideal place for curious listeners to familiarize themselves with the Undisputed Truth's career. ~ Rob Theakston This is part of Motown's "Funk Essentials" series. Additional Tracks Producer: Norman Whitfield. Compilation producers: Harry Weinger, Rickey Vincent. Liner Note Author: Rickey Vincent. Unknown Contributor Role: Weldon McDougal III. Undisputed Truth: Billie Rae Calvin, Joyce Evans, Joe Harris, Taka Boom, Virginia McDonald, Tyrone Douglas, Tyrone Berkeley, Calvin Stephenson. Additional personnel: Norman Whitfield (arranger): The Funk Brothers.

Very Best of Otis Williams and His Charms: Ivory Tower CD (2003)
CD $15.59 Buy It  Details
Greatest Hits of Donnie Elbert/Have I Sinned buy CD music Otis Williams & the Charms were purveyors of fine, primitive R&B-influenced doo wop in the '50s. Their biggest pop hit was 1954's "Hearts of Stone" (later given the dubious honor of being covered by Pat Boone), but they also struck gold with "Ivory Tower" and the super cool and not very P.C. "Ling, Ting Tong." The 25 tracks on Collectables' The Very Best of Otis Williams and His Charms are all solid gold doo wop, some of the best being the rollicking Leiber & Stoller-penned "Bazoom (I Need Your Lovin')," a bopping cover of Patsy Cline's "Walkin' After Midnight," the peppy "Dynamite Darling," and the achingly sweet "Could This Be Magic." Anyone who digs the Coasters should be sure to investigate these guys, because they share the same lighthearted charm (if not the same overall quality). This is also the best collection on the market for the group, gathering up all their best songs in a well-sequenced presentation with fine sound quality to boot. ~ Tim Sendra One of the best known classic Doo Wop songs of all-time 'Hearts Of Stone' was recorded by Cincinnati vocal group, Otis Williams & The Charms in 1954. The group was a mainstay on the R&B charts in the 1950s. Otis Williams continues to perform and as a deserving true pioneer of R&B, was inducted into the United Group In Harmony Hall Of Fame in 2000. 'Ling, Ting, Tong', 'Two Hearts' and 'Ivory Tower', included in this collection, were all top ten hits for Otis Williams & The Charms. 25 tracks. Collectables 2003. Liner Note Author: Victor Pearlin.
