A decade too late for the original shoegazer movement, L.A.'s Cerulean land somewhere in between Oxford, England's Ride and Hershey, PA's the Ocean Blue on this follow-up to 1999's Skylight. Long on echo-laden atmospherics and inventive guitar-scapes, "Violet" has a pensive, dream-like float that is countered by the aggressively paced rocker "Very Happy With." Balancing soft guitar lines and melodies ("I'll Believe," "I Miss October") against the likeable thump of "Ready," vocalist Rick Bolander's lyrics are poetic and introspective. Alongside his bandmates, Brighter/Still is ideally suited for disciples of the Trash Can Sinatras, the Sundays, Catherine Wheel, and Sunny Day Real Estate. ~ John D. Luerssen
An ambitious step forward from their 1999 debut 'Skylight', Cerulean's 'brighter/still' successfully captures the broad scope of Cerulean's sound, spanning the distance between crashing arena tremblers and haunting mood pieces. Matching this intensity with stunning lyrical imagery, 'brighter/still' speaks with cohesion, purpose, and a sense of urgency rarely heard.Other albums:Skylight (1999)Fractions EP (2004) - out of printNo Sense In Waiting (2005) Brighter/Still Music | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs | | Label | spinwheel | | Orig Year | 2003 | | CD Universe Part number | 6030480 | | Catalog number | 6022 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | May 28, 2002 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo | | Recording Time | 50 minutes |

Purchase Brighter/Still CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Susan Boyle I Dreamed A Dream CD (2009)
Brighter/Still album
$9.55 Susan Boyle's grand unveiling on Britain's Got Talent was with a song from Les Miserables - the very song that lends this album its title -- and if she could become an international sensation based on a show tune standard, there's no reason for her to change her approach on her debut, since that's the sound that made her a star. Plus, a large part of Boyle's appeal is that she's a middle-aged woman recalling a bygone era when there were singers that appealed to an adult audience by offering soft, stately versions of pop hits and standards. That time was the late `60s and early `70s, and apart from a rather faithful version of Madonna's "You'll See," I Dreamed a Dream could very well have been released all those years ago, as it mixes up the show tunes, gospel, and Christmas carols with ...
| | Jimmy Buffett Buffet Hotel CD (2009)
Brighter/Still CD music
$9.74 Since Jimmy Buffett never leaves his comfort zone, it's hard to call 2009's Buffet Hotel a return to roots but, in a way, it is. Discounting the mock rap on "Turn Up the Heat and Chill the Rosé," this album doesn't even have the lingering country and reggae flavors that seasoned 2006's Take the Weather with You, with all of the songs riding a cool, mellow country-rock wave, the kind that has been his stock-in-trade since the `70s. There's a difference between being part of a tradition and being stuck in the past and Buffett is surely in the former, not shying away from the new millennial mess, admitting ...
| | Mark Knopfler Get Lucky CD (2009)
Brighter/Still music CDs
$15.65 With the release of GET LUCKY, Mark Knopfler has made as many solo studio albums as he made group studio albums with Dire Straits, which itself may be a signal that it's time to stop comparing his two careers and simply accept them as separate entities. Of course, since Knopfler was the lead singer, chief instrumentalist, and songwriter for Dire ...
| | Lady Gaga Fame Monster CD (2009)
Brighter/Still songs
$8.79 Initially planned solely as a standard double-disc reissue in the wake of the blockbuster success of The Fame, Lady Gaga decided to release the new material as a separate EP called The Fame Monster in addition to the standard two-CD set, where it's tacked onto a now standardized version of her debut. It's a nice move for fans, plus it helps emphasize the new material, which does act as a bridge from the debut to a forthcoming full-length. Everything on The Fame Monster bears a galvanized Eurotrash finish, as evident on the heavy steel synths of "Bad Romance" and the updated ABBA revision "Alejandro," as it is on the rock & roll ballad "Speechless" -- its big guitars lifted from Noel Gallagher -- and the wonderful, perverse march "Teeth." ...

| | Bon Jovi Circle CD (2009)
Brighter/Still CD music
$11.17 Bon Jovi's 2007 effort, LOST HIGHWAY, found New Jersey's finest brandishing a Nashville-tinged, commercial rock/country crossover sound that wasn't too far a stretch from their usual arena rocking anthems for the Everyman. And where that album sometimes tried too hard to fit into the conventions of trad country, sacrificing some of the fist-pumping potency of their best `90s-era efforts in the process, THE CIRCLE, the band's fifth studio effort of the `00s, is a back-to-roots return to form ...

| | Dave Weckl Zone CDs (2001) CD & DVD
Brighter/Still songs
$17.85 Disc 2 of THE ZONE is a DVD video sampler containing highlights from Dave Weckl's three instructional videos.
A too-good-to-be-true package for aspiring jazz drummers everywhere, this incredible product features one disc of the best selections of the legendary fusion drummer's last three Stretch Records releases, and a special DVD with highlights from his three instructional videos put out by Carl Fischer. The ten tracks arguably feature some of modern jazz fusion's most adventurous jams and give hope that the genre that's not either traditional or smooth jazz can still thrive. The funk-drenched "Wet Skin" is Weckl's retro-soul-minded tribute to James Brown, with Brandon Fields' sax doubling ensembling with Jay Oliver's sly organ harmonies and Buzz Feiton's crisp and punch-rock guitar licks. "Alegria" means happiness, and the tune with that title is in turn wild and optimistic, a honking jam featuring Fields on tenor, soprano, and alto flute. Steve Weingart's feisty Fender Rhodes improvisations also give off an old soul fusion effect. The same sort of powerfully electric, intensely rhythmic horn-section vibe pervades the disc, with Weckl experimenting ...
| | Danny Schmidt Enjoying The Fall CD (2001)
Brighter/Still album
$17.09 HERE'S WHAT SOME FOLKS HAVE SAID:"I've not felt a performance with this much intensity since I saw Neil Young solo years ago. Nor have I heard songwriting with this much subtlety of craftsmanship since Leonard Cohen. I was completely floored."~ Henri Simmons, from The Filter"I have rarely, if ever, been so moved or impressed by an artist as I have by Danny Schmidt. What else can I say, the guitar work strikes me like none other I have heard in my long life of playing guitar myself . . . Check him out, no matter what kind of music you like, check him out! I guarantee you, if you don't you are missing one of life's treats."~ Bill Bruedigam, Inside Indie Music"He's as witty as a Cafe Wha?-era Dylan, his voice expressive and world-weary as an Appalachian plowman."~ Internet Songwriters' Guild Top 10"Danny Schmidt's done it again. One of the country's best singer-songwriters, the Charlottesville, Virginia-based musician has released yet another masterpiece, only a year or so after his successful Live at the Prism Coffeehouse."~ Les Reynolds, from Indie Music Magazine"One of my favorite singer-songwriters. A haunting, ageless voice; melodies that are both simple & original; wry, moving lyrics; a guitar style that's as organic as it is unpredictable. What force is he tapping into, anyway?"~ Brady Earnhart, exceptional Virginia-based singer/songwriter"It's honest, bare bones storytelling at it's best. It's such a warm and inviting recording, you're waiting for the audience's applause after each track."~ Tori Mazur, Music Beyond Radio"Danny plays a guitar as natural as he breathes -- he has some seriously tasty songs and a debut CD that ...
