This is the same Dan Hartman who topped the dance charts in the 70s. He has also produced such notables as Tina Turner and James Brown.

Although the title might suggest that this is a collection of Marlene Dietrich's German-language work from the '30s, DAS LIED IST AUS is actually something of a hodgepodge. Collecting songs from various eras of her career in non-chronological order, these German, English and French songs are all exquisitely sung. Dietrich was a more comfortable singer in German and French, less likely to fall back upon the world-weary half-spoken tone she often adopted for her English-language material. Hearing the different singing styles she adopted for different languages is fascinating and instructive; while the anthology feels a little scattershot, it's impossible to argue with the quality of the material.
