On two other songs where Yoko is not the dominant theme, she is nevertheless invoked through the "oh no, oh no" refrain. That's not to say that love songs predominate. Half of the material covers similar terrain to PLASTIC ONO BAND, but the themes are balanced by hope and even light-heartedness. "Crippled Inside" is leavened by its country stylings including Dobro, courtesy of George Harrison, who also spices up two of the album's pivotal tracks, "Gimme Some Truth" and "How Do You Sleep?" (the latter is a vitriolic attack on Paul McCartney). Outside of PLASTIC ONO BAND, this may be Lennon's finest solo album.
Considered together, IMAGINE and its startling predecessor, PLASTIC ONO BAND, paint a vivid picture of the state of John Lennon immediately post-Beatles. If PLASTIC ONO BAND found John working out his hitherto repressed feelings about childhood and stardom, then the abiding impression of IMAGINE is John's one certainty in this storm of doubts and recrimination: his love for Yoko. "Jealous Guy," with its peerless vocal and a spot-on arrangement for strings, is sublime. "Oh My Love" is all delicacy and melodiousness. "Oh Yoko!" is a celebratory finale with none of the cloying self-obsession of John and Yoko's home movies.

Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir. This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary; frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind her. Sleek, sensual, and retro-futuristic, the Januaries' self-titled debut fuses smooth, Bacharach-inspired pop, '60s rock, and slinky trip-hop elements into a surprising and distinctive collection of songs. Over the course of his musical career, Trent Reznor has managed to deliver a full-length studio album about every five years. Although he's a bit late with 2005's WITH TEETH (following 1999's THE FRAGILE), listeners are rewarded with Nine Inch Nails' most streamlined and straightforward record since PRETTY HATE MACHINE. Here Reznor cuts back on programming and synthesizers, opting for heavy use of guitars, bass, and--surprisingly--piano and live drums. In fact, the album's secret weapon is drummer Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Nirvana), whose thunderous percussive style gives certain songs--most notably the frenetic "You Know What You Are?"--added weight and a welcome no-frills rock edge. Though the techno/industrial element of Reznor's music has been played down, his lyrics are typically angst-ridden, with dramatic tales of isolation, deception, loss, and love gone wrong. More than 15 years after his debut, Reznor is as tormented as ever, and Nine Inch Nails fans wouldn't have it any other way.
