(2 Customer Reviews)
Keir Fraser and James Braddell return once again to their 9 Lazy 9 moniker after a three-year absence. Sweet Jones is the group's best yet, on par with the high standards of Braddell's Funki Porcini records as of late. Like Funki Porcini, 9 Lazy 9 make relaxation records for the spaced-out adding a breezy Mediterranean feel comparable to Atom Heart's dope and pina colada excursions. Electronic horns and xylophones rub against a handful of guest musicians on bassoon, flute and acoustic guitar. It's all put together with just a bit of a smirk, but Fraser and Braddell seem to favor lounge music enough not to parody it. The only thing to quibble about is "Grazing Maize": its melody and structure warrant much more than the one sole minute it's given. Otherwise it's a gratifying listen start to finish and probably the classiest album Ninja Tunehave ever released. Despite what Fatboy Slim thinks, the weekend starts here. ~ David Jeffries

Sweet Jones album
$12.85 With 2001's Outer Space/Inner Space -- how apt a title and motif for this space odyssey! -- Flanger vault even further forward into the future of jazz while somehow managing to keep one foot in the roots of hard bop, free jazz, Latin jazz, and samba. The grounding element is most likely the core of guest musicians, including players from Cologne, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark; and Santiago, Chile. On the title track a robotic voice chants "outer space" over decidedly retro Latin jazz rhythms augmented by occasional synthesizer flourishes and beats that are equal parts organic percussion and electro loops, again blurring the line between jazz old and new, which appears to be the Flanger modus operandi. "Galak" is an astronaut's floating dream with its fluid blend of spacy vibes and earthy acoustic bass, its spiraling ascent chased along by dueling congas and fusion guitar. A squelchy computer rhythm clashes with driving acoustic drums while two keyboards and processed bass and guitar battle it out furiously on "The Man Who Fell to Earth," evocative of a more down to earth ...
| | Funki Porcini Fast Asleep CD (2002)
Sweet Jones CD music
$14.49 Chillout albums were all the rage during the early 2000s, but despite the attention, no one had made a record quite like Funki Porcini's Fast Asleep since the glory days of ambient techno, when the Orb's "A Huge Ever-Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From the Centre of the Ultraworld" merged Tangerine Dream, the Mad Professor, and Larry Heard into a collage of pastoral bliss. Fast Asleep, though obviously functional in a variety of contexts, wasn't designed to soundtrack trips back from the clubs or lazy nights at home with friends, and as such, it neatly side-steps the conscious hipness that usually compromises chillout records. James Braddell, a downbeat veteran stretching back more than a decade, crafted Fast Asleep to move in and out of its framework, with lengthy transitions introducing -- or deconstructing -- virtually every production. Similar to another Orb classic, U.F.Orb, the track markers aren't immediately obvious, though as the record progresses, it's easier to spot songs amidst the dark, film noir atmospheres and distorted vocal samples. Braddell does dubby ambient techno the way the ...
