The budget-priced compilation has been staple in punk rock label land almost since the genre was born. It's a great medium to get unreleased or hard-to-find material from veterans into fans' hands, while at the same time promoting the greenhorns just coming up from single A ball. Vol. 4 of Kung Fu's Punk Rock Is Your Friend series adheres to this formula, offering unreleased material from the Vandals, as well as a glut of promising grooves from tenderfoots like Audio Karate (the high school lovin' anthem "Rosemead," featuring the classic line "Daydreams of you and I/Wrote your name on my folder a 1,000 times"). But like its roster of boisterous punk revivalists, who bop freely between the old-school sounds of the Buzzcocks, the late-'80s Cali scene (NOFX, Green Day), and the 21st century populist "punk" of blink-182 and the like, Kung Fu has retooled the existing format of the punk comp to include wacky graphics and a full plate of video content to complement its 17 audio selections. Clips from Alkaline Trio, Ozma, and others stream alongside the unreleased songs -- the God Awfuls' Clash-flavored "Disconnected Youth," Antifreeze's "Question" -- and giddy nuggets from Tsunami Bomb and the label's recent breakout stars the Ataris. Tsunami Bomb's "Say It if You Mean It" is a standout -- Agent M's vocals flirt with the line between pugnacious and passionate, while the band makes the old Bay Area chugga chugga rock anew. mi6 wins the Fat Mike Wacky Lyrics Award for "Lezbian Girlfriend," and Useless ID shows off some impressive harmonies on "Too Late to Start Over." There's also "One Man Army," a live track from S.O.D. that's culled from the same Kung Fu DVD series as Punk Rock Is Your Friend's videos. It's a serious amount of content for $4.00, and should any of Kung Fu's other young bands follow the Ataris into mainstream stardom, this comp will provide you with OG bragging rights. ~ Johnny Loftus

I found this cd while on a trip to Philadelphia, I didn't have much money, but I wanted a cd to listen to on the trip home. I saw this cd, and the price was reasonable, so I got it, I listened to it non-stop for 7 hours and feel in love with it, it's one of those albums you'd be upset that you missed

Jenifer Jackson's second album is a small masterpiece by a singer/songwriter who should be mentioned in the same breath as Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, or Beth Orton when great modern pop singer/songwriters are being discussed. On So High, Jackson and producer Pat Sansone have crafted an intimate record built on gently strumming guitars, polite drums, and judicious use of electronics. Lest you think the record is sonically boring, there are plenty of instrumental touches that keep things interesting: accordions, weird synthesizers, samba-style drum machine beats, lots of mellow piano. The best songs are the ballads like "Since You've Been Away" and "End of August," where Jackson's hushed vocals sweep the listener away on a gentle wave. "Through Leaves" is especially beautiful, with an understated bossa nova feel, sort of like an Astrud Gilberto ballad but with singing that stays in tune. The uptempo tracks are solid, too. "Down So Low" is the best of these, sounding like a strong Sam Phillips track. "So High" is another stunner, with Jackson sounding like an angry young Chrissie Hynde on the chorus. The record's highlight is the seven-and-a-half-minute "Got to Have You," which rides a loping Memphis soul beat and sounds like a classic Carole King song, but much funkier. It is a totally unexpected departure and it really works well. "So Warm" is full of nice surprises, but the one constant that puts the record over the top is Jackson's voice. Her angel-pure vocals are warm and sensual throughout the album. Even if the songs were weak, the vocals would be enough to make the album worthwhile.
