Real 70S
$10.45 THE BEST OF THE MOODY BLUES contains vintage photographs and a conversation with Justin Hayward.
Recorded between 1964 and 1988. Includes liner notes by John Reed.
By keeping it simple and sticking to the hits, this collection successfully relates the story of this pioneering band. The Moody Blues began as a Gerry & the Pacemakers-like, R&B-influenced band fronted by sad-voiced singer Denny Laine, who is heard here on "Go Now." Laine was replaced by Justin Hayward, keyboardist Mike Pinder brought in a Mellotron, and the band hooked ...

| | Pete Anderson Daredevil CD (2004)
Real 70S
$10.55 Pete Anderson's third solo outing has been a long time coming, and one gets the distinct impression that it's the album he's been itching to make all along. Given that Daredevil is completely instrumental, the guitar geeks already have something to salivate about. But there's much more to it than that. Anderson played the vast majority of instruments, with help in a few places from multi-instrumentalist Skip Edwards and minimal assistance from trumpeter Lee Thornberg and fiddler Donny Reed as well. There's also some string work performed by some mysterious entity know as "the Skipper." If the Latin Playboys were an instrumental country band, they would almost certainly sound something like this. While it's true that Anderson's guitaristry is signature to ...
| | Small Faces Ogden's Nut Gone Flake CDs (1968) England; Deluxe Edition
Real 70S
$33.75 The Small Faces present their four disc U.K. import reissue release OGDEN'S NUT GONE FLAKE.
Having begun their career as the archetypal Mod band, the Small Faces latterly embraced traces of flower-power's whimsy. Astute enough not to sacrifice their identity, the quartet retained a distinctive perspective, as evinced by a string of superb pop singles, including "Here Comes The Nice" and "Itchycoo Park." A sense of pop melody and adventurism culminated on this album which encompassed tongue-in-cheek fun ("Lazy Sunday") and passionate love songs ("Afterglow"). Steve Marriott's voice remains completely self-assured and the group's characteristic organ-based swell is often enhanced by P.P. Arnold's emotional backing vocals. Eccentric comedian Stanley ...
| | Vanilla Fudge Then And Now CD (2004)
Real 70S
$13.49 The title of the album is Then and Now, and a sticker on the front of the CD's jewel box proclaims, "The greatest hits! The best collection ever! Includes 3 new songs!" The clear implication to the potential buyer is that this Vanilla Fudge album contains the original 1960s recordings of such hits as "You Keep Me Hangin' On," along with three recently recorded tracks. But that is not the case. Then and Now is an entirely newly recorded album on which the 2004 edition of Vanilla Fudge -- bassist Tim Bogert, guitarist Vince Martell, drummer Carmine Appice, and organist Bill Pascali (replacing original member Mark Stein) -- recreates its versions of songs that appeared on its Atco Records albums and singles of the '60s. (On one track, "Need Love," Martell is replaced by Teddy Rondinelli, as the San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra backs the band in a ...

| | Capstan Shafts Fixation Protocols CD (2008)
Real 70S
$12.65 The third album is usually about the time the law of diminishing returns catches up with a band that doesn't change its sound much from album to album. Although the sound still may be great, the performances lively, and the songs just as catchy as before, the magic can't help but fade. This is the fact behind the Capstan Shafts' third album, Fixation Protocols. Apart from a slight boost in sound quality and the occasional tinkling piano, it sounds exactly like the previous two albums, Euridice Proudhon and Environ Maiden. Dean Wells (the man in the one-man band scenario) still writes brief, punchy pop songs that are heavily indebted to Guided by Voices' brand of Brit-pop worship and raw, one-take sensibility. It sounds like Wells has run out of ideas but is pressing on regardless. Hopefully, Wells will find more of that elusive inspiration soon, because at his best, he's a fine songwriter. ~ Tim Sendra
The third album is usually about the time the law of diminishing returns catches up with a band that doesn't change its sound at all from album to album. Although the sound still may be great, the performances lively, and the songs just as catchy as before, the magic can't help but fade measurably. This is the sad fact behind the Capstan Shafts' third album, Fixation Protocols. Apart from a slight boost in sound quality and the occasional tinkling piano, it sounds exactly like the previous two albums, Euridice Proudhon and Environ Maiden.
