It is a real pity that this session from baritonist Pepper Adams was for a now-defunct label for it is one of his best recordings. Adams, accompanied quite tastefully by pianist Jimmy Rowles, bassist George Mraz and drummer Billy Hart, sticks primarily to straightahead material and he often roars through such songs as "Dexter Rides Again," "Three Little Words" and "Pent Up House"; the ballad "Time On My Hands" and his title cut are fine change of paces. ~ Scott Yanow

Recorded at Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey in 1981. Includes liner notes by Fred Goodman.

Personnel: Pepper Adams (baritone saxophone); Jimmy Rowles (piano); George Mraz (bass); Billy Hart (drums).

"Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste. Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire a laid back bluesy Hank Mobley tenor solo. ...

On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, ...

Booker Ervin Tex Book Tenor CD  (2005)

CD $10.25  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Tex Book Tenor was recorded in 1968 as a follow-up to Booker Ervin's debut date for Blue Note, The In Between, which was released in January of the same year. (Ervin had made two records for Pacific Jazz, which is now owned, like Blue Note, by EMI.) The album remained unreleased until 1976, when it was issued with an also unreleased Horace Parlan date on a double LP called Back from the Gig. This is its first appearance on CD. The lineup is stellar and includes Billy Higgins, Woody Shaw, Kenny Barron, and bassist Jan Arnet from Czechoslovakia. Barron and Ervin had worked together before, and Arnet had worked with Ervin three years earlier as a touring partner in Germany. The music here includes three Ervin originals, Barron's wonderful "Gichi," and Shaw's "In a Capricornian Way." The Afro-Latin-influenced grooves of "Gichi" display Ervin playing his solo in prime snake-charmer mode. His own "Den Tex" is classic ...

Pepper Adams was one of the greatest jazz baritone saxophonists of all time. During a time when Gerry Mulligan's cool-toned baritone was very influential, Adams rose to prominence with a harder and bigger sound, much more hard bop than cool. This relatively obscure release, originally an LP for the World Pacific label, finds the baritonist in Los Angeles matching his hard-driving style with several players identified with West Coast cool jazz. Trumpeter ...

Helen Humes Tain't Nobody's Biz-Ness If I Do CD  (1959)

Urban Dreams
CD $9.89  Audio Samples
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1990, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Helen Humes had not recorded as a leader in seven years when she made the first of three albums for Contemporary, all of which have been reissued on CD via the OJC imprint. Humes, 45 at the time, was at the peak of her powers, although she never really made a bad record. Accompanied by Benny Carter (on trumpet), trombonist Frank Rosolino, tenor saxophonist Teddy Edwards, ...
Silent Knowledge
Elton Dean Silent Knowledge CD  (1995)

Urban Dreams
CD $15.59  Audio Samples
Although Dean is titular head of the quintet, three-fifths of its personnel is made up of members of the Mujician group -- Tony Levin on drums, Paul Rogers on bass and Paul Dunmall on tenor sax. Regular Mujician pianist Keith Tippett is replaced by Sophia Donmancich, who has a robust, two-handed attack, although perhaps less of Tippett's musical eccentricity. Dean plays his customary alto sax and saxello, no longer doubling on electric keyboards as he did during his early Soft Machine days. The long opening piece, "Gualchos," betrays a strong and not unwelcome Coltrane influence, beginning with the rolling thunder of Donmancich's piano, and then a solemn minor theme played by the saxes in unison. Everyone then has ample opportunities for soloing, with Dunmall's hoarse, impassioned ...
