| | Tribute To Matchbox Twenty CD (1 Customer Review)
A Tribute to Matchbox 20 features a handful of faceless studio types turning in eager versions of 12 Twenty favorites. Besides the star-making "Push," the set leans heavily on material from Mad Season and 2002's More Than You Think You Are. None of its varying vocalists have the range or nuance of Rob Thomas, but most can approximate his soulful growl well enough to stumble through; exceptions would be the atrocious "Mad Season," which borders on karaoke, and "Unwell," where respectable musicianship and dynamics are marred by an amateurish vocalist. "If Your Gone" fares better, and even works when the plaintive tones of a trumpet are added to its instrumental track. But the majority of A Tribute to Matchbox 20 aims for passable bar band territory and falls noticeably short, which makes this album essential for only the most ardent Matchbox fan. ~ Johnny Loftus

$14.38 The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh ...

Tribute To Matchbox Twenty album
$14.45 Switching from electronics to live instruments for his first album for Tomlab, the science-informed concept album Everything/Everything finds the wonderful work of Simon Bookish -- somewhere between the informed wryness of Ivor Cutler and the continuing impact of David Bowie's archly English romanticism -- in full flight. With the music provided by orchestrations from woodwinds, strings, brass, and much more besides, the feeling is one of playfulness, a resistance to and celebration of easily grasped pop forms and a sense that the world is there to be amused at and with. Even so, there are a couple of overarching models or two Bookish can't quite escape -- Stereolab is almost the gimme, thanks to songs like "The Flood" and the juggernaut of "Alsatian Dog" suggesting the meta-'60s pop of that group well at work, but with Bookish's none-more-English vocals ...
