A Confederate officer faces trial for running the notorious prison of war camp in Andersonville, Georgia, where over 14,000 Union prisoners died from disease and neglect. The defendant, Cpt. Wirz, claims he was only following orders, relieved of responsibility because he was performing his duty. However, the Army prosecutor contends that men must rebel against inhumane orders, even if within the framework imposed by military discipline. George C. Scott directed this powerful adaptation of Saul Levitt's 1959 play about one of America's most notorious trials -- the prosecution of Henry Wirz for atrocities committed against POWS during the Civil War.
Wirz was in charge of the Andersonville prisoner of war camp in Georgia. There, the Confederate Army held many Yankee soldiers captive and subjected them to severe overcrowding, rat-filled facilities and a lack of food. Although Wirz argued that he was only following military orders and, therefore, couldn't be held accountable, prosecutors tried to prove otherwise... A superb made-for-TV drama about the infamous P.O.W. camp where 14,000 Union soldiers died under conditions not unlike those found in World War II Nazi camps. Aired originally on NET as a presentation of Hollywood Television Theatre on May 10, 1970.
George C. Scott appeared in the original 1959 play. Andersonville Trial Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Andersonville Trial is Television Theatre at its Best I am a longtime student of the Civil War (or War Between the States). I also am a student of Andersonville or Camp Sumpter, having made several trips to the site. I currently live in Columbus, Georgia. The Andersonville site is about 60 miles southeast of us. The National Prisoner of War Museum is located in the park. I highly recommend it. While this play is a composite of the trial of Henry Wirtz, I feel it conveys accurately the testimony given during the trial. I feel that Richard Basehart's portrayal of Wirtz is brilliant. He is an underrated actor. The cast is very good. You'll recognize most of the actors from other television and film roles. William Shatner is at his emotional best. Jack Cassidy is at his stoic, sly best. Cameron Mitchell does a believable job as the presiding officer of the Union military panel. All in all, this is one of the most entertaining and accurate teleplays on the Civil War. Direction and introduction by George C. Scott doesn't hurt. And oh yes, this production was done within the same year of "Patton." Not a bad year's work. Please see this and visit Andersonville. -- Chuck Crouch

Andersonville Trial DVD A court martialed Confederate officer faces trial for running the notorious prison of war camp in Andersonville, Georgia, where over 14,000 Union prisoners died from disease, starvation and neglect. The defendant, Captain Henry Wirz, justified his actions with a plea that he was only following orders, believing he was relieved of any personal responsibility because he was performing his duty. However, the Army prosecutor contends that moral men must rebel against barbaric or inhumane orders, even if they are within the framework imposed by military discipline. A powerhouse courtroom drama in the style of Inherit the Wind, A Few Good Men and The Caine Mutiny. With an all-star cast includes William Shatner ("Star Trek"), Martin Sheen ("The West Wing"), Cameron Mitchell (Carousel), Richard Baseheart (Being There), Jack Cassidy (The Eiger Sanction), Buddy Ebsen ("The Beverly Hillbillies") and Alan Hale ("Gilligan's Island"). Directed by the celebrated George C. Scott (Patton), who starred in the original 1959 Broadway production. Winner of Three 1971 Emmy Awards: Outstanding Single Program, Drama or Comedy / Outstanding Writing Achievement in Drama, Adaptation / Outstanding Achievement in Technical Direction and Electronic Camerawork.
