Soul-jazz organist Big John Patton turns in five groove-driven pieces on THE WAY I FEEL.

For his third album, Big John Patton decided to expand his band to quintet. Retaining the services of his longtime colleagues, guitarist Grant Green and drummer Ben Dixon, he hired tenor saxophonist Fred Jackson (who also played on Along Came John) and trumpeter Richard Williams. The combination of two horns can occasionally overshadow the groove Patton, Green, and Dixon lay down, but for the most part the musicians augment the music instead of detracting from it. Nevertheless, the combo never manages to match the peaks of Along Came John and Blue John. There are several fine moments on the record, and Green and Patton are typically enjoyable, but the record overall is a slight disappointment after its two predecessors. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

How a good-looking Jewish boy from Brooklyn discovered the secret of success in an updated form of mariachi music is perhaps beyond our scope. Then again, it might not be such a mystery after all. Aside from the obvious example of exotica, much easy listening depends upon more than a touch of ethnicity to maintain its musical roots. What Herb Alpert found in Mexican street bands was a previously untapped source of south-of-the-border melody and rhythm. In light of his extensive and diverse jazz fusion resume (Weather Report, Dizzy, Miles), it would be easy to criticize multi-instrumentalist Alphonse Mouzon's The Survivor as an unsophisticated turn by an artist who has dug deeper in the past. But why not celebrate the collection for what it is--an intensely joyous, tightly played, melodic, energetic blend of pop jazz colors, one which will continue to expose this master to a new audience. Though he offers some lush keyboard musings, Mouzon functions less as a player here than as producer, drawing magnificent lead performances from the genre's elite--Lee Ritenour, Richard Elliot, George Howard, Brandon Fields, Kirk Whalum, Ernie Watts, and so on. Russ Freeman's breezy acoustic guitar is reminiscent of the best Rippingtons work. The only drawback is that a drummer of Mouzon's magnitude would choose to work with drum machines. ~ Jonathan Widran
