There are few musicians whose music has indisputably advanced humanity. Reggae figurehead Bob Marley--a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary--is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley's achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist's different faces--revolutionary ("Get Up Stand Up"), romantic ("Is This Love"), devout Rastafarian ("Buffalo Soldier"), and prophet ("One Love/People Get Ready") are equally represented.
In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like "Stir It Up," "I Shot the Sheriff," and the gorgeous, poignant "Redemption Song" proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley's output would require some early ska material, the Wailer's debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley's genius. A record well suited to any location, season, or time of day, it has proven universal in its appeal. The music herein is as essential ...

| | Bad Brains CD (1982)
Music Monks music CDs
$11.25 BAD BRAINS was originally released on cassette. It was issued on CD for the first time in 1996.
The Bad Brains were one of the most important voices of the East Coast hardcore scene during its halcyon days of the '80s. What they brought to the scene was nothing short of revolutionary--infusing the form's rage with the spiritual conviction of the Rasta tradition and the instrumental prowess of seasoned jazz players, they breathed new life into a genre in danger of stagnation, or worse, homogenization. Their album on the initially cassette-only ROIR label arrived like a new day, brimming with positivity and spirituality, as well as an unarguable mastery of the musical form of hardcore.
From the album's opening strains on "Sailin' On," the book was re-written, or at least opened a little wider. Vocalist H.R., one of punk's speediest singers, growls and screams his message like a man possessed. On the band's most recognizable classic, "Pay To Cum," his staccato delivery truly reaches breakneck speed, barely decipherable, the song is a torrent of sound, a hurtling juggernaut of boundless energy. He extols the praises of having the right mindset most effectively in "Attitude," a testament to the power of positivity. The band reaches deep into its ...

| | Ub40 Labour Of Love CD (1983)
Music Monks album
$8.85 This is UB40's "tribute" album with cover versions of their favorite songs from 1969 through 1972.
Playing reggae and supporting the UK Labour Party during a decade of Thatcherism and racism demonstrated that these chaps had morals and guts. They eventually prospered (good ultimately conquers bad) and they can now look back and taste their achievement. In the UK, UB40 have done as much to popularize reggae as Bob Marley did for the rest of the world. This is their most refined album and contains some of their major hits. They make a point in the sleeve-notes of informing the listener that all these songs had been recorded by Jamaican artists. No apology is needed - their 'Cherry Oh Baby' and 'Red Red Wine' have become classics for this band. Much respect, irie.
Personnel: Ali Campbell, Robin Campbell (vocals, guitar); Norman Hassan (vocals, percussion); Jack Graham , Mo Birch, Ruby ...
| | Catch 22 Keasbey Nights CD (1998)
Music Monks CD music
$11.39 Something of a 21st-century third wave ska supergroup, New Jersey's Streetlight Manifesto include Tomas Kalnoky, an ex-member of rival ska outfit Catch 22, which is presumably one of the reasons the band have chosen to rerecord Catch 22's 1998 album KEASBEY NIGHTS. Penned by Kalnoky, it's mostly a breakneck collection of punk-oriented ska featuring a tight, punchy horn section, with a set of themes that vary from the teen angst of "Sick ...
| | Eric Clapton Unplugged CD (1992)
Music Monks music CDs
$11.09 Eric Clapton's live performance on MTV's strip-down-the-rockers show allowed the heavily-blues-influenced guitarist a chance to show off another, underrated side of his talent--his voice.
It's especially interesting to hear Clapton in an acoustic setting, because he made his mark as one of the early proponents of high-decibel rock. Here, sorting through numerous blues standards by the likes of Robert Johnson and Leadbelly, Clapton gives a lesson in technique, style and musical passion. His own, newer material allows him to stretch and play, while the heavily-grooved, slowed-down remake of his classic "Layla" is the essential standout. "Tears In Heaven," a moving tribute to his son's passing, is emotionally raw, yet stylistically smooth--a difficult task to achieve.
Stripping down the music of an artist as technically ...
